What is Gunsmithing?
Gunsmithing is a weapon customization feature in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (CoD: MW3) that lets you modify weapons with various attachments to suit your preferences. This allows you to improve a weapon’s characteristics such as power, range, recoil, and stability using up to 5 types of parts unlocked via leveling the weapon in online matches.

How to Unlock Gunsmith
Can be accessed from the multiplayer menu under Weapons (after reaching Player Level 4).
Once you reach Player Level 4, you can access the Gunsmith feature from the multiplayer menu by going to Weapons (top section of the screen). Afterwards, view your loadout and weapon slots and select Gunsmith below.
Customizing Weapons via Gunsmith
Up to 5 attachments can be used to modify weapons.
As mentioned, you can equip up to 5 types of attachments to a weapon. Note that it is also possible to modify the weapon’s settings for specific loadouts, allowing you to compare and contrast the performance of the same weapon in different configurations.
Aftermarket Parts
Aftermarket Parts allow you to apply special modifications to weapons which significantly change their performance and appearance (potentially transforming them into entirely new weapons). Aftermarket Parts become available once a weapon reaches its max level.
By using Aftermarket Parts, weapons can gain new characteristics such as a different firing mechanism or the allowing the installation of parts that were normally incompatible with its original version.
Conversion Kits
Conversion Kits are special types of Aftermarket Parts that completely remodel a specific type of weapon. Converting weapons is considered the highest level of Gunsmithing an armament can undergo as the process can often result to some of the most best variants of notable guns in the game.
Conversion Kits are unlocked by clearing weapon challenges that only become available after reaching the weapon’s max level. These additional requirements may take time to clear so you may need to spend a lot of time grinding online matches to unlock Conversion Kits for any weapon.
Weapon Camos and Other Cosmetics
The Gunsmith feature also lets you apply any Weapon Camos, Charms, and other cosmetics you have obtained throughout the game. These items are rewarded for completing missions in various game modes or leveling up weapons.
Note that equipping cosmetics will not affect your weapon’s performance in any way so feel free to customize your armament’s appearance to your liking.
