Zombies (MWZ) Guide for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (CoD: MW3)

What is Zombies (MWZ) Mode?

Zombies or MWS is a PvE co-op survival game mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (CoD: MW3). Players are organized into teams to take down hordes of zombies around a large map.

Different zombies are encountered in MWZ which include regular and boss-type variants. The latter are particularly dangerous as they are able to perform powerful attacks with far greater effective range than their lesser kin.

MWZ Gameplay

The MWZ game mode is summarized in the sequence of stages below.

Prepare your loadout → Start the game from a random location on the map → Accumulate Essences through various methods → Move to areas with higher threat level → Head to the extraction point before the Aether Storm occurs.

Prepare your loadout.

Before you begin MWZ, you must prepare your loadout. Choose weapons and field upgrades based on your familiarity of using them and how well they fair against groups of regular zombies and bosses in the game.

Start the from a random location on the map.

When the game starts, your team is deployed on a Low Threat Zone of the map. These areas are mostly inhabited by regular zombies and hellhounds, though human mercenary enemies belonging to the Terminus Outcomes faction will occasionally spawn to hinder your team’s progress as you travel across different areas.

Accumulate Essences through various methods.

As you kill enemies and clear Contract Missions in each zone, you will earn Essences (MWZ currency) to use for upgrading your weapons which will help you take down stronger enemies in the Medium and High Threat Zones.

Completing certain Contracts can also allow you to get Reward Rifts that contains free perks, upgraded weapons, or Aether Tools to improve the rarity of armaments you use throughout the game.

Rare loot found scattered in the different zones can also be sold off at Buy Stations to earn points.

Move to areas with higher threat level.

As you outfit yourself with better gear, start moving to Medium and High Threat Zones. Be warned that armored enemies will start appearing in these locations so make sure your team has enough firepower to take them down.

Head to the extraction point before the Aether Storm occurs.

From the time you start the game, you have about one (1) hour to reach the extraction point before the Aether Storm occurs (45 minutes before the Aether Storm expands and 15 minutes to exfil). Otherwise, clearing the mode will become much harder as the Aether Storm will slowly deplete your health while causing zombies and other enemies to become much stronger inside the phenomenon’s perimeter.

You will lose your weapons and equipment if you die or fail to exfil.

Dying or failing to reach the extraction point in time will cause you to drop all weapons and equipment you have collected and upgraded during the game. A successful exfil, meanwhile, lets you keep your gear for use on your next challenge.

MWZ Story Mission Acts

Below is a list of all story mission acts in MWZ. Each act has several tier missions that consist of specific objectives to complete while going around the map.

MWZ Rewards

Playing through MWZ allows you to obtain special rewards which include weapon and equipment schematics and Operator skins. Schematics, in particular, are among the most useful of these items acquired for clearing the mode as you will be able to craft new armaments and tools to use on your next MWZ deployment.
