Cruelcumber’s arsenal of offensive skills that allow him to hit all enemies make him an ideal sweeper, especially during the game’s early stages. He is considered the best starter monster for going through the main story as you can easily build a team around him from the beginning of the game.

The most obvious downside to picking Cruelcumber is that he only has one support skill (though a very useful one), making him quite a one-dimensional party member, despite doing it very well.

Best Starter Monster to Choose

Recommended Starting Monster: Cruelcumber

Cruelcumber is generally the best monster to get when starting the game for the first time. Cruelcumber’s arsenal of powerful multi-target attacks make it easy to clear out groups of enemies encountered while going through the early stages of the main story.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince Best Starter Monster to Get

Cruelcumber can also be bred to produce arguably better offspring compared to the other starting monsters which further makes the Nature-type creature a good choice for beginners and veterans of the Dragon Quest Monsters series.

All starter monsters can be obtained later via scouting or synthesis.

Regardless of which starting monster you pick when speaking to Monty, you will be able to obtain the ones you did not get later in the game via scouting or monster synthesis. Because of this, feel free to pick any monster you like at the start of the main story.
