The early-game monster party listed above consists of three attackers and one healer for clearing the main story from Terrestria up until you unlock Monster Synthesis.
Note that any of the other starting monsters you get from Monty will also work well with this setup, though Cruelcumber will make it easier to clear out mobs encountered in the early maps.

Once you unlock Monster Synthesis, it is recommended to form a monster team that centers around Hunter Mech as the primary attacker. This monster can output high damage numbers very quickly as it has powerful slashing attacks in addition to being able to act twice.
In terms of elemental attacks, Raptile and Cannonbrawler are good choices as you progress through breeding routes and scouting areas in the game. Both monsters also possess characteristics that let them spam attacks at 1/2 of the normal MP cost.
Finally, try to get Cureslime as your main support monster. Its arsenal of support abilities to heal, revive, and remove status ailments from allies will serve you well through the beginning stages of the main story.
