The best starter monster to choose in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince (DQ Monsters: The Dark Prince) is Cruelcumber. This monster learns many multi-target attacks such as Woosh and Swoosh early on, making battles much easier as you go through the main story.

Cruelcumber is also more useful in Synthesis as it can be synthesized to obtain generally better monsters compared to other starting ones you can get from Monty in the game.
