What is Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince?

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince (DQ Monsters: The Dark Prince) is the latest entry in the Dragon Quest Monsters series of spin-off role-playing games within the acclaimed Dragon Quest franchise.

As with previous DQ: Monsters titles, DQ Monsters: The Dark Prince lets players capture and train over hundreds of monsters appearing in the Dragon Quest universe. While often compared to the Pokemon series, DQ Monsters features a number of key differences that set it apart from its most obvious competition such as full-party monster battles, an intricate monster breeding system, and unique battle mechanics.

Story

DQ Monsters: The Dark Prince follows the tale of young Psaro, the primary antagonist of Dragon Quest 4, who goes on a journey to undo the curse placed on him by his father Randolfo, the tyrannical ruler of Nadiria and monsterkind.

Due to the effects of Randolfo’s curse on Psaro, the latter is unable to defend himself against monsters. Because of this, he becomes a Monster Wrangler who persuades monsters to his cause to fight alongside him in battle.

“Journey into a fantastical world on a quest for revenge in DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince.

Psaro is cursed and is unable to harm anything with monster blood. Now, he must become a Monster Wrangler to create an army for battle.

The hunt for high-ranked monsters takes Psaro through the ever-changing seasons of Nadiria and its unique environments, with rivers of bubbling lava, mysterious ancient ruins, and soaring towers of cake. Along the way, Psaro meets the kind-hearted elf, Rose, who joins his adventure to seek out ever-stronger monsters.

The key to Psaro’s success lies with synthesis: the ability to combine two monsters and create a stronger offspring. Each new creation brings Psaro one step closer to his goal of becoming the Master of Monsterkind.”

Gameplay

Full-Party Monster Battles

DQ Monsters: The Dark Prince retains the series full-party monsters battles that let you command up to four creatures at a time. More than 400 monsters can be captured, bred, and trained in the game which include new and returning creatures rendered in the franchise’s playfully colorful design.

Monster Breeding

In addition to acquiring monsters via scouting (capturing), players can also breed them to obtain powerful rare variants that possess the traits and abilities of its parents.

This feature allows you to build competent monster teams to command while journeying across Nadiria during the main story, taking part in challenging Monster Arena battles, or going head-to-head against other Monster Wranglers online.

Monster Arena

Aside from progressing through the main story of DQ Monsters: The Dark Prince, players can spend time in the Monster Arena to battle NPC Monster Wranglers who have trained their own parties of formidable creatures.

You will need a competent monster team of your own in addition to keen strategy to seize victory against rivals you meet as you go up the arena rankings in the game.

Online Monster Battles

DQ Monsters: The Dark Prince also lets you engage in online player-versus-player (PvP) Monster Battles against other Monster Wranglers around the world. PvP is likely to make up the majority of end-game as you will be spending time breeding and trying out different team setups against other players.
