What is the AE86 Trueno?

The AE86 Trueno is a front-engine, rear-wheel drive coupe produced by Toyota from 1983 to 1987. It is one of the most iconic cars in motorsports, particularly in touge racing and drifting. The car is typically associated with Keichii Tsuchiya, a Japanese professional driver famously known as the “Drift King” for his unmatched skill in performing advanced “drifting” techniques with the vehicle.

The AE88 or “Hachi-Roku” as it is affectionately referred to in Japan, however, achieved widespread popularity through the Japanese manga and anime Initial D. The series’ protagonist, Takumi Fujiwara, drives an AE86 to deliver tofu up and down a mountain pass in his hometown in Gunma prefecture. It is there that Takumi develops his unlikely passion for touge racing and eventually steps up to the challenges of rival street racers throughout the series’ story.
