Changes made during play will force you to restart from the nearest save point.
Note that any changes under Settings will force you to restart from the nearest save point. This may be a disadvantage if you had not saved your game for a while. Because of this, make sure to save before changing the game difficulty from the Settings menu.
No other consequences or penalties to changing the difficulty mid-game.
There are no consequences or penalties to changing the difficulty at any point during the main story. Experience points (XP) and items obtained are the same regardless of the setting you choose to play on.
Which Difficulty Should you Choose at the Start of the Game?
Start the game on Normal mode.
When going through the main story missions for the first time, it is generally recommended to play on Normal mode. This allows you to experience the game on its default setting with standard challenge posed by enemies. Action Assist will also disabled which help you learn and get better at the game than if you started with Story mode.
If you find Normal mode too difficult, just play on Story mode which features weaker enemies. Action Assist will also be enabled, making it easier to perform moves via displayed button inputs on the screen.
Action Assist
Playing on Story mode with Action Assist enabled also applies a slow motion effect whenever enemies use powerful attacks. There is also button prompt to evade such attacks, making it easier to defeat strong enemies such as bosses in the game.
