Ways to Earn Skill Points (SP)

Level up to earn SP.

SP is earned whenever your monster levels up. Try to farm areas based on your party’s level to earn SP fast. Do not hesitate to move to new farming spots if the XP you gain from defeating field and dungeon monsters starts to go down.

Standby and Ranch monsters passively earn EXP and level up outside of battle.

Monsters you put on Standby or at the Ranch will also passively earn a portion of the EXP earned by the active monster party as summarized below.

Main Party Monsters 100% of Battle EXP
Standby Monsters 50% of Battle EXP
Ranch Monsters 25% of Battle EXP

Use Skill Seeds to get SP.

Rare consumable items called Skill Seeds will instantly grant any monster 3 SP when used. You can get Skill Seeds throughout the game as monster drops or farewell gifts from creatures you decide to part with.

Note that you can earn a maximum of 999 SP through using Skill Seeds only.

Pass down SP to offspring via monster synthesis.

Monsters created through synthesis can inherit half of the SP accumulated by each of their parents in addition to both parents’ skills. This means that you can level up monsters accumulate SP and then synthesize them to grant the resulting offspring a higher initial SP to work with.

The table below illustrates the amount of SP transferred by monster parents to offspring via synthesis.

Parent 1 SP Parent 2 SP
60 100
Transferred SP Transferred SP
60/2 = 30 100/2 = 50
Offspring SP
30 + 50 = 80
Passing Down Skills and SP Invested in Them

When a monster offspring inherits a skill from any of its parents, half of the SP allocated by the parent to those skills are also passed down to it. In addition, half of the SP that each parent has not spent yet is inherited by the offspring.

For instance, a parent who has invested 30 SP to a skill will pass down both the skill and 15 SP to that particular skill to its offspring. If that one parent has 100 SP that they have not allocated yet to any skill before synthesis, the offspring will inherit 50 SP from them.

Passing Down SP from  Uninherited Skills

SP invested by parents to skills that the offspring does not inherit is also transferred to the offspring. Similar to inherited skills, the uninherited skill SP earned by the offspring is also half of that allocated by the parent. This ensures that no SP is wasted after monster synthesis is complete.

Skill Evolution via Synthesis

Monster offspring may gain evolved forms of skills via synthesis inheritance if their parents have allocated the maximum number of SP to certain skills. It is also possible for offspring to acquire improved versions of abilities if both parents possess the same skill and the total number of SP invested by both is at least equal to the maximum value.

Some special skills are gained by the offspring through special combinations of inherited skills.

Monster offspring can also acquire certain special skills if the specific combinations of abilities are inherited from both parents and the maximum SP were allocated to those abilities.

Ways to Earn SP Fast

Synthesize monsters to get monsters with at least three skills.

The more skills a monster has, the more skill points (SP) you will earn for leveling up. Because of this, you should spend time synthesizing monsters until you acquire offspring with at least 3 three (3) skills.

Below is a table comparing SP earned by monsters with 3 skills and those with 2 skills, including the level at which SP are earned and the total SP accumulated per level.

Use items to increase EXP gained.

Since earning SP is directly tied to leveling up, it is recommended to use items and accessories that grant your monsters increased EXP gain in battle.

Consumable items such as Bonus Balls and Bumper Bonus Balls let you earn more EXP than normal for a limited number of battles is ideal for farming SP. You can also use the Training Medal accessory to accumulate more EXP for faster leveling in the game.

How to Use SP

Spend SP to learn skills.

Monsters can learn skills by spending SP at the skill allocating menu. Unlike other RPGs, DQ Monsters: The Dark Prince requires you to manually allot SP to unlock skills so be sure to actively spend the resource throughout the game.

Know which skills to learn, especially in the early stages.

During the game’s early stages, try to prioritize learning skills that can deal damage to all enemies or skills that let you heal or remove status ailments from allies. Doing so will give you an easier time with most encounters in the beginning stages of the main story until you master the different mechanics of the game.

Skills that increase the stats of monsters, meanwhile, have very negligible impact in the early stages so it is recommended to spend SP on them later.

You cannot refund SP or respec skills.

Be warned that SP you spend on unlocking skills is permanent. There is no way to refund SP or reset your skill progression manually. Because of this, it is recommended to turn off autosave to avoid wasting SP by accident.

It is, however, possible to revert skills to their default state via resetting in the same method as monster synthesis, though this process may be too troublesome or time-consuming to be a good option.
