How to Catch Shiny Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
What are Shiny Pokemon?
Shiny Pokemon are extremely rare variants of Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (Pokemon SV) that sport different color patterns from their regular species. They are mostly hunted for collection purposes, commonly referred to as “Shiny Hunting”, because of their unique appearance.
Shiny Appearance Rates
Shiny Pokemon in the game have a 1/4096 chance to appear which is abysmally low. Because of this, do not miss the chance to catch any Shinies that somehow spawn on the map during the main story.
Tips for Catching Shiny Pokemon
Use the Shiny Charm to increase the chances of encountering Shinies.
You can increase the appearance rate of Shiny Pokemon to 3/4096 by obtaining the Shiny Charm. This key item can only be acquired once you have cleared the main story (requires clearing the Champion Road, Legend, Stardust Street, and Homeway story sections) and catching all 400 Pokemon to complete the Paldea Pokedex.
Once you have achieved this feat, talk to Professor Jacq at the Biology Room of the Academy to be rewarded the Shiny Charm.
Some Useful Information on Shinies
- Without the Shiny Charm, the chance of a Shiny Pokemon spawning is at very low 0.02%. This rate jumps to about 0.07% when the Shiny Charm is obtained.
- Pokemon will not engage in auto-battle with Shiny Pokemon.
- It is possible to “steal” Shiny Pokemon by traveling to world of other players (online).
- Saving near a Shiny Pokemon will reset them.
