Splatoon 3 - Squid Roll

The Squid Roll is an advanced movement technique in Splatoon 3 which allows you to leap and twirl in different directions while swimming in ink. The maneuver is mainly used for reducing incoming damage, as the ink vortex produced during the move can provide minor protection against enemy attacks.

Steps to Do a Basic Squid Roll

Below are the steps to perform a regular Squid Roll in Splatoon 3.

1 While on flat terrain filled with ink, press ZL to swim and gain speed.
2 Once you gain top speed, flick the left stick in a different direction from your original course.
3 Press B. If done correctly, you should briefly jump out from the ink while spinning.

Variations and Sub-Techniques

Squid Roll Wall Jump

You can perform a Squid Roll Wall Jump to give you added mobility and evasive options during a match. The Squid Rill Wall Jump can be seen as performing a second Squid Roll, triggering the ink vortex twice in succession to protect you against attacks.

1 Start near a wall and swim in the opposite direction (away from the wall).
2 Start your Squid Roll towards the wall.
3 Flick the left stick in the direction you want to jump off to.
4 Press B. If done correctly, you should bounce of the wall into a second Squid Roll.

Additional Mechanics and Tips

  • The angle of your Squid Roll (relative to your original course) must be at an angle of about 90 degrees for it to work.
  • You will lose speed each time you perform 3 consecutive Squid Rolls. Note that it takes a total of 9 Squid Rolls to come to a stop from top speed.
  • The ink vortex activated during a Squid Roll will not be able to protect you against powerful splashes of ink.
  • You will still take damage during a Squid Roll if you change between human to Inkling/Octoling form too quickly.
