Dragon’s Dogma 2 Which Starting Vocation Should You Choose?
Recommended Mage Vocation Progression
Order | Vocation | Recommended Rank | Details |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Thief | 2 | Unlocks Subtlety (Augment Skill). |
2 | Archer | 4 | Unlocks Endurance (Augment Skill). |
3 | Mage | 4 | Unlocks Beatitude (Augment Skill). |
4 | 8 | Unlocks Perpetuation (Augment Skill). | |
5 | 9 (MAX) | Unlocks Exaltation (Augment Skill). | |
6 | Magick Archer | 8 | Unlocks Ascendancy (Augment Skill). |
The best progression for an all-around Mage is to immediately unlock Subtlety from the Thief vocation to lower targetability in battle. Then, switch to Archer to increase your stamina pool for casting spells by getting Endurance.
From there, you will want to improve your Mage’s performance for providing support to allies by getting Beatitude and Perpetuation. If you want a more offense-focused spellcaster with less versatility, feel free to get Catalysis and Sagacity instead. Finally, be sure to unlock Exaltation to allow you to regain stamina to reduce the downtime of not being able to cast spells due to lack of stamina.

Weapon Skill | Effects | Details |
---|---|---|
High Levin | An advanced form of Levin that summons a greater number of lightning bolts when cast. |

How to Unlock | Unlock at Mage Vocation Rank 4 for 1,000 Dcp. | |
High Halidom | An advanced form of Halidom that has an extended duration and cures the debilitations caught fire, frostbite, unconscious, sleep, silence, drenched, tarred, torched, ice-bound, and blighted. |
|
How to Unlock | Unlock at Mage Vocation Rank 4 for 1,000 Dcp. |
The biggest drawback of any Mage build is having very low durability due to the vocation’s naturally poor HP and defense stats. Because of this, you will want to get High Palladium to be able to negate incoming damage, especially from enemy attacks that cover a wide range on the battlefield.
This Mage build’s main source of firepower is High Levin and High Conflagration, both very powerful area-of-effect spells used for quickly dispatching enemy mobs or for exploiting elemental weaknesses or larger, more threatening foes.
Be sure to set-up High Palladium first before positioning yourself to cast spells as you are essentially helpless in the state.
Finally, getting High Halidom essentially gives you an all-in-one remedy for various debilitations which saves you the trouble of having to carry several healing items in your inventory. You will be able to travel lighter with the spell learned which gives you more inventory space to pick up loot you find while exploring.

Recommended Core Skills
Core Skill | Effects | Details |
---|---|---|
Quickspell | Greatly hastens incantation speed. Consumes Stamina while active. |
|
How to Unlock | Unlock at Mage Vocation Rank 2 for 250 Dcp. | |
Anodyne | Conjures a magickal curative sigil that recovers the health of the caster and their allies when in contact with it. |
|
How to Unlock | Unlock at Mage Vocation Rank 2 for 250 Dcp. | |
Levitate |
Manipulates the caster’s weight through magickal means, allowing them to float temporarily. |
|
How to Unlock | Unlock at Mage Vocation Rank 3 for 400 Dcp. |
Quickspell is undoubtedly the most useful core skill for Mages as the shortened cast time can spell victory or defeat in many battles. Anodyne is also good core skill to get for allowing you to save up on healing items thanks to the ability’s passive HP recovery effect. For exploration, unlocking Levitate will allow Mages to reach high places which may contain treasure chest and other loot so consider investing some Dcp to get it.
Recommended Augment Skills
Augment Skill | Effects | How to Unlock |
---|---|---|
Subtlety | Decreases the likelihood of being targeted by foes. | Unlock at Thief Rank 2 for 300 Dcp. |
Endurance | Increases your maximum Stamina. | Unlock at Archer Rank 4 for 900 Dcp. |
Beatitude | Increases the amount of Health recovered by curatives and curative magicks. | Unlock at Mage Rank 4 for 900 Dcp. |
Perpetuation | Extends the duration of enchantments and invigorations. | Unlock at Mage Rank 8 for 3,000 Dcp. |
Exaltation | Augments your Stamina recovery speed. | Unlock at Mage Rank 9 (MAX) for 5,000 Dcp. |
Ascendancy | Augments the Strength and Magick of pawns in your party. | Unlock at Magick Archer Rank 8 for 3,000 Dcp. |
A vocation that thrives in the backline, Mages will benefit from not being easily targetable by enemies as they cast spells. This magic-reliant class also requires a good stamina pool to be able to spam offense and support spells so consider getting Augment skills that boost your maximum stamina and stamina recovery speed as early as possible.
Mages are easily designated as the party’s healers so improving the potency of magic that restores HP will enhance the entire team’s survivability, especially during tough encounters.
