Dragon’s Dogma 2 Which Starting Vocation Should You Choose?
Recommended Thief Vocation Progression
Order | Vocation | Recommended Rank | Details |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Thief | 2 | Unlocks Subtlety (Augment Skill). |
2 | Fighter | 2 | Unlocks Mettle (Augment Skill). |
3 | Warrior | 2 | Unlocks Vitality (Augment Skill). |
4 | Archer | 4 | Unlocks Endurance (Augment Skill). |
5 | Mage | 9 (MAX) | Unlocks Exaltation (Augment Skill). |
6 | Thief | 9 (MAX) | Unlocks Verve (Augment Skill). |
From the Thief starting vocation, be sure to unlock Subtlety immediately to lower the chances of drawing the attention of enemies.
Thieves suffers from having naturally low HP and defense for a melee class. Because of this, it is recommended to improve survivability by getting the Mettle and Vitality Augment skills from the Fighter and Warrior vocations respectively.
From there, consider upgrading your stamina by changing into the Archer vocation for Endurance and the Mage vocation for Exaltation. Finally, switch back to Thief and get Verve to boost your damage output.

|
How to Unlock | Unlock at Thief Vocation Rank 5 for 1,300 Dcp. |
When building a Thief, be sure to get Cutting Wind as this is your primary offensive skill that comes with the added bonus of giving you excellent mobility on the battlefield. Then, focus on getting Implicate as means to ground airborne enemies which may be hard for your Pawns to aim at.
For large enemies like bosses, Skull Splitter gives you a reliable way to stack damage using multiple strikes. The move can even hit multiple small enemies if they are clustered together well enough.
Finally, Shadow Veil is your main skill for avoiding detection which can easily make certain quests easier. It has its uses in combat, you will want to use it sparingly due to the constant stamina depletion when it is activated.

Recommended Core Skills
Weapon Skill | Effects | Details |
---|---|---|
Scarlet Kisses | Unleashes a flurry of forward slashes. | Strong offensive tool that does not require stamina to use. |
How to Unlock | Unlock at Thief Vocation Rank 1 for 150 Dcp. | |
Controlled Fall | Tucks the body into a tight roll when hitting the ground after being knocked down, allowing the user to quickly regain their feet. Reduces damage taken upon impact. |
|

Bump and Lift | Robs the target of an item when an attack connects. Activates when using Carve, but has a low success rate. |
|
How to Unlock | Unlock at Thief Vocation Rank 3 for 400 Dcp. |
Bump and Lift is undoubtedly the best core skill for the Thief vocation as it is basically the Pilfer and Plunder weapon skills in passive form. Being able to steal items from enemies using attacks is one of the best ways to farm rare loot you can sell as well as valuable Wyrmslife Crystals in the game.
Scarlet Kisses, meanwhile, gives you a stamina-less offensive option that you can readily use any time in battle.
Finally, Controlled Fall is a nice damage mitigation ability to have, though your goal is to generally avoid getting hit by enemies.
Recommended Augment Skills
Augment Skill | Effects | How to Unlock |
---|---|---|
Subtlety | Decreases the likelihood of being targeted by foes. | Unlock at Thief Rank 2 for 300 Dcp. |
Mettle | Augments your physical Defense. | Unlock at Fighter Rank 2 for 200 Dcp. |

Endurance | Increases your maximum Stamina. | Unlock at Archer Rank 4 for 900 Dcp. |
Exaltation | Augments your Stamina recovery speed. | Unlock at Mage Rank 9 (MAX) for 5,000 Dcp. |
Verve | Increases physical attack power | Unlock at Thief Rank 9 (MAX) for 5,000 Dcp. |
As mentioned, the Thief cannot take as much punishment themselves compared to Fighters, Warriors, and certain Warfarer builds so the class has to compensate for this via Augment skills from the more durable jobs. To improve further improve survivability, Thieves want to avoid drawing aggro as much as possible as well.
Thieves enjoy naturally high stamina efficiency which can further enhanced further by unlocking Augment skills from the Archer and Mage vocations.
