Strategy
How to Defeat
Cast Hastega when the fight begins to gain the speed advantage for your party. Delay the turns of the Yu Pagodas with Slowga. The boss is vulnerable to a number of negative status effects, most notably zombie and blind. Use Auron’s Zombie Attack and Banishing Blade or have Kimahri come into the fight ready to use his Bad Breath Overdrive on the boss. The Yu Pagodas will cast healing spells on the boss, which will damage him if he is a zombie. The pagodas will remove any ailments from the boss after a while, so be sure to reapply them when this happens.
Do not use the “Talk” trigger command during this phase of the fight as it will be very important during the next. Talking to the boss significantly reduces its Overdrive gauge and is only usable up to two times. The boss’ Overdrive during the first phase is survivable for a low to mid-level party, while the one used in its second phase is not.
Cast Protect and Regen to give low HP characters like Lulu and Yuna more survivability, as they will be among your main damage dealers. Have Lulu doublecast Ultima or Flare to burst down the boss. Yuna should focus on unloading each of her aeon’s Overdrives, though it is recommended to save them for the second phase of the fight.
Jecht Beam’s petrification effect can be cured with Softs. You can minimize the need to remove this ailment by having characters equip Stoneproof armor.
When the second phase of the fight begins, reapply Hastega on your party and Slowga on the Yu Pagodas. Have Auron and Kimahri inflict negative status effects on the boss again.
Watch the rate at which the boss’ Overdrive gauge fills each turn to use “Talk”. This buys you time before the boss is able to use Ultimate Jecht Shot, an attack which almost always wipes out the entire party.
Burst down the boss with each all of your aeon’s Overdrive attacks. If you have enough MP, stack on even more damage with Yuna’s Holy and doublecasting Lulu’s Ultima and Flare spells. If most of the party is equipped with celestial weapons, the fight will likely end quickly.
