Strategy
How to Defeat Yunalesca
During the first phase of the fight, cast Hastega to gain a speed advantage. Characters affected by silence, sleep, or blind should be cured with Yuna’s Esuna or with Remedies. You can also come into the fight with equipment that negates any of the mentioned status effects, depending on whether a character is a physical or magic damage dealer. For offense, Holy is good for bursting down Yunalesca until the battle continues to the second phase.
Yunalesca in her second form will use Hellbiter to inflict zombie on a party member. She will follow it up by casting Curaga on the target to deal high damage. While you will want to cure zombie characters with Holy Water, it is best to have at least one character under zombie status before going into the last stage of the fight. To keep zombie characters alive, cast Reflect on them to make the healing spell bounce back to Yunalesca. Just remember to use Dispel when she casts Regen to stop her from continuously gaining HP.
Note that Yunalesca will sometimes cast healing spells, most notably Regen, on non-zombie characters. This may be caused by the boss’ AI treating all characters in the active party as undead after using Hellbiter, even if characters were switched out with non-zombie ones or were simply cured of the ailment.
Continue attacking the boss with spells and physical attacks. Remember to keep the zombie character alive as you enter the last phase of the battle.
When the last phase begins, Yunalesca will cast Mega Death. This instantly kills all non-zombie characters. Having Rikku with Auto-Phoenix will be especially useful for this. After reviving all fallen characters, continue unloading on Yunalesca with Holy and other attacks. Use Overdrives when you can to stack up even more damage on the boss until she is defeated.
