At a massive 375 Attack and Stagger (Will gauge damage), the legendary sword Gotterdammerung is the best weapon for Clive in Final Fantasy XVI (FF16) for New Game (NG). It is only bested by the post-game reforged weapons (Stormcry Reforged, Flametongue Reforged, Levinbolt Reforged, Grindstone Reforged, Brightburn Reforged, Icebrand Reforged, and Everdark Reforged) and the legendary Ultima Weapon which you can only craft in New Game Plus (NG+) on Final Fantasy Mode.

Before starting NG+, it is highly recommended to have obtained Gotterdammerung which will serve you well until you can finally replace it with any of the reforged elemental swords and the much more powerful Ultima Weapon.

How to Get Gotterdammerung

Can only be obtained via crafting (NG).

You can get Gotterdammerung via crafting by first clearing the Blacksmith’s Blues side questline (Blacksmith’s Blues I, II, III, and IV) that are all initiated from The Hideaway. To unlock each quest, you must simply progress through the main story.

Once the quest chain is complete, you will receive the Gotterdammerung Design Drafts (crafting recipe) from August which lists the required rare materials to craft the legendary weapon.

Note that most of crafting materials needed to make Gotterdammerung are dropped by high-rank Notorious Marks which are unlocked in the late-stages of the main story.

The legendary Ultima Weapon utterly outclasses the Gotterdammerung at an overwhelming 700 Attack and Stagger. It is the most powerful sword for Clive in the game and is a highly-recommended weapon for clearing Final Fantasy Mode (NG+).

Final Fantasy XVI (FF16) New Game Plus (NG+) Guide

Ultima Weapon is essentially Final Fantasy Mode’s version of the Gotterdammerung crafted in NG but with significantly higher stats to deal with the enhanced enemies found in the more challenging difficulty setting.

How to Get Ultima Weapon

Can only be obtained via crafting (NG+ on Final Fantasy Mode).

As with Gotterdammerung, the game’s strongest sword Ultima Weapon can only be obtained through crafting on Final Fantasy Mode (NG+) once you have beaten the game’s main story for the first time.

Begin a NG+ run on Final Fantasy Mode (NG+) to automatically obtain Utterance of Creation x1, the first material required to forge Ultima Weapon. Afterwards, you will need to craft Everdark Reforged using Eikon Shards (obtained by progressing through the main story), Flawless Dark Shard (obtained by defeating Barnabas – this item is required for upgrading Everdark to Everdark Reforged), Meteorite+ x24 (purchased at the Notorious Marks shop), Magicked Ash x400 (common item loot), and Demon Fang x800 (common item loot).

Finally, you will need to craft Gotterdammerung Reforged in NG+ again by redoing the entire Blacksmith’s Blues side questline at The Hideaway. The other materials required to craft Gotterdammerung Reforged are acquired in the same way as those in NG as well (although they will be rarer variants of the original materials).

After obtaining all 3 required crafting materials (Utterance of Creation x1, Everdark Reforged x1, and Gotterdammerung Reforged x1), you will be able to forge Ultima Weapon at the blacksmith.
