Press the □ button (square) at the exact moment of an enemy’s attack to unleash a sword strike which will parry the incoming move.

After performing a successful parry, a temporary gap in enemy’s offense will be active which will slow down time for a certain period. This allows you to seize control of the battle and gain the advantage.

Tips for Parrying

Watch your opponent’s movements.

When dealing with an enemy you have never encountered before, avoid attacking too much and focus on watching your foe’s attack patterns.

Parries are much easier to do against an enemy’s attack that has a slow windup and easily telegraphed motion.

What to Do If You Have Trouble Parrying

Focus on evasion instead.

Final Fantasy XVI FF16 - How to Do Precision Dodge

Parrying has a fairly high level of difficulty to pull off. It is also quite risky since you will take damage if you fail to time an enemy’s attack correctly.

You do not have to force yourself to always aim for parries. If you are having trouble with parry timing, you can opt to do Precision Dodges instead. This move is done by dodging at the right moment during an enemy’s attack. Precision Dodges are less risky and will allow you to follow up with attacks to deal damage against foes in the game.
