What is Magic Burst?

Magic burst is a combat ability in Final Fantasy XVI (FF16) that allows you to connect a melee attack with a magic shot. The technique requires more inputs than simply doing repeated melee attacks but allows you to reduce the enemy’s Will (stagger) gauge faster.

How to Do a Magic Burst

You can do a Magic Burst by pressing the △ button at the right time after doing a melee attack with the □ button.

Magic Burst Combo

8-Hit Magic Burst Combo: □→△→□→△→□→△→□→△

With Magic Burst, you can string together up to 8 consecutive hits with increasing attack power the more melee attacks you link together between bursts. By performing the full Magic Burst Combo (8 hits), you will deal significantly more damage than with the normal 4-hit melee combo.

Advantages of Magic Burst

Lets you deplete the enemy’s Will gauge faster to initiate Takedowns.

You can force enemies into the Takedown (staggered) state much faster by constantly landing Magic Bursts. An enemy’s stagger gauge is indicated by a yellow bar under their HP meter. When the Will gauge reaches 0, your foe will go into Takedown, rendering them temporarily defenseless in battle and take increased damage from the damage multiplier applied during the state.

Increased Damage Multiplier during Takedown.

It will be easier to raise the damage multiplier when the enemy is in Takedown by connecting as many attacks as you can with Magic Burst. During Takedown, the damage dealt is multiplied according to the number of hits (via a damage multiplier of up to x1.5).

Tips for Magic Burst

Press □ > △ alternately in a constant rhythm.

Magic Burst is activated  by pressing □ and △ alternately in a constant rhythm so avoid mashing the buttons. Try practicing the technique at the Hall of Virtue (Arete Stone) to get the timing down so it becomes second nature to you in battle.

The melee attack animation can be misleading.

If you base your Magic Burst timing on Clive’s attack animation (swinging his sword), you may not be able to do the technique consistently. Pressing △ faster than what is within the activation window will not activate a Magic Burst.
