Final Fantasy XVI (FF16) - What Happens If You Get a Game Over?

A guide on what happens if you get a Game Over for Final Fantasy XVI (FF16), including gameplay mechanics of losing in battle, options after dying against regular enemies and bosses, and other useful tips.

Final Fantasy XVI (FF16) - What Happens If You Get a Game Over

What Happens If You Get a Game Over in Final Fantasy XVI (FF16)?

Potions and High Potions are replenished.

When you get a Game Over in Final Fantasy XVI (FF16), your stock of Potions and High Potions will be replenished. Because of this, do not hesitate to use these items to manage your HP so that you do not die in battle and get a Game Over.

Consumable Tonics are not replenished.

Unlike HP recovery items, consumables such as Stoneskin Tonic, Strength Tonic and Lionheart Tonic will not be replenished when you restart the battle after a Game Over.

You can restart from the nearest Obelisk.

You can choose between restarting from the nearest Obelisk or return to the title screen when you die against regular enemies in the field. If you want to continue after getting a Game Over, you should restart from the nearby Obelisk.

You can retry boss battles.

Dying against bosses lets you conveniently retry the battle again without having to start from the nearest Obelisk you visited.

No major penalties or consequences from getting a Game Over.

There are no major penalties or drawbacks to getting a Game over such as losing any resources like in other action games.  You will, however, be sent back to the nearest Obelisk. Because of this, try to save as often as you can while progressing through the game’s main story.

Game Over (Arete Stone Game Modes)

No Game Over in the Hall of Virtue (Training Mode).

You can set enemies to attack you in the Arete Stone’s Hall of Virtue (training mode) but you will never die. This is because you will always have 1 HP left no matter how many times you take damage which makes it impossible to get a Game Over.

Getting a Game Over in Arcade Mode and Stage Replay

If you die and get a Game Over while in Arcade Mode or Stage Reply Mode, you can only select “Start Over” or “Return to the Hideout”. For boss battles in either of these modes, you can choose “Retry” to restart the boss battle again after dying.
