How to Farm Ability Points Guide for Final Fantasy XVI (FF16)
New Game (NG) Ability Point Farming
Farm Bluebirds around the Holy Empire of Sanbreque region.
A good area to farm Ability Points is in various fields of the Holy Empire of Sanbreque. The Bluebirds here will yield 40 Ability Points when defeated which will allow you to earn the resource fairly fast on New Game (NG).

Ways to Earn Ability Points
Win battles to earn Ability Points.
At the end of each battle in Final Fantasy XVI (FF16), Clive earns Ability Points which are used to learn and upgrade his various abilities and Eikon attacks. Constantly enhancing Clive’s different moves allows him to deal more damage, perform new and longer combos, or gain more tools to defend himself against enemies which is essential for progressing through the game’s main story smoothly.
Farming enemies is also a good way to earn experience (EXP) to level up fast and money (Gil) to purchase items or avail of various services in towns. You will benefit from spending time fighting monsters to amass Ability Points and levels as you progress through the game’s later chapters.
Equip Ring of Timely Strikes and Ring of Timely Evasion (Timely Accessories)
Equipping the Ring of Timely Strikes (auto attack) and Ring of Timely Evasion (auto dodge) can also help you farm regular enemies as these items essentially do half the work of fighting enemies for you.
Ring of Timely Strikes (Timely Accessory)
Name | Effect |
---|---|
Ring of Timely Strikes | When equipped, complex ability combinations can be executed by simply pressing ◻. |
Description | “If there were a ring that transformed a novice swordsman’s awkward jerks and jabs into a veritable dance of precisely executed flourishes, one might wonder why every knight in the realm didn’t have one of their own.” |
Ring of Timely Evasion (Timely Accessory)
Name | Effect |
---|---|
Ring of Timely Evasion | When equipped, Clive will automatically evade attacks, as long as the attack can be evaded. |
Description | “Fleetness of foot requires lightning-quick reflexes, eagle-like vision, and razor-sharp focus, not to mention the calves of a puma. That, or this convenient ring.” |
Set the Gameplay Focus (Difficult) to Story Focus
It is also recommended to change the Gameplay Focus (difficulty) to Story Focus which lowers enemy HP and attack power. This lets you clear battles with less effort than on Action Focus mode for earning Ability Points fast.
Do Side Quests.
You can also farm Ability Points by clearing side quests. Many of these optional missions pit you against new monsters you may not have encountered yet during the main story, including tougher ones that yield a lot of Ability Points when defeated.
As you visit new areas and locations, try to talk to non-player characters (NPCs) with a green exclamation point above their head which indicate that a side quest can be initiated. Once activated, you can open Alliant Reports from the game’s menu to quickly fast travel to a side quest’s location.
Many side missions can only be unlocked by progressing further into the main story or by completing pre-requisite quests within what are called chain quests (or questlines). Try to do as many side quests as you can before leaving a specific town or village in the game.
Do Hunts and slay Notorious Marks.
Doing Hunts is also a good way to earn Ability Points. To begin a Hunt, head to the Hunt Board at Cid’s Hideaway unlocked during the early stages of the game. Useful items are also rewarded for felling Notorious Marks of certain Hunts so it is worth taking the time off the main story to do them.
The higher the rank of a Notorious Mark, the better the rewards. More difficult Hunts that require you to take down powerful monsters will naturally yield more Ability Points when you clear them.
How to Respec Ability Points
Can be done from the Ability menu.
Ability Points can be reallocated at any time from the Ability screen. To reclaim Ability Points individually, place the cursor on an ability and press the □ button (square).
You can also completely reset an Ability’s level and reallocate all Ability Points spent on it by pressing and holding the touchpad on the Ability screen.
