Choosing between Deen and Sonya
This article shows the recommendation on Choosing between Deen and Sonya in Act 3 of Celica’s Story in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.

Deen and Sonya
The two characters appear in Act 3 of Celica’s Story with only one of them joining the party. At first glance it seems like a difficult decision given their varying roles.
Choose Sonya
In comparison to Sonya’s, Deen’s growth rate is slower. Although he belongs to the Myrmidon class which is a precious unit for the team, usually the team by this time would already consist of several classes similar to Deen, thus Sonya is often a better choice.
Apart from her class, Sonya gains the upper hand not only with a commendable Stats growth rate, but she also wields the powerful Excalibur.
As a Mage Class, Sonya benefits from earning high Experience in a battleground where monsters that rely heavily on close range thrive. By keeping her at the back of the team, she will then take advantage of long-range spells to effectively take out approaching enemies.
It is recommended to invest in Recovery Spells once you decide to have her Change Classes. Although you will still complete the Main Story regardless of who you choose, if you remain undecided, Sonya is a valuable team player.
