One Piece Odyssey adopts a typical turn-based command battle system that is somewhat similar to Dragon Quest XI with four party members in the active party battling enemies.

Since there are 13 playable characters with 4 as temporary guest characters, some characters are relegated to backup characters during an encounter.

While playing the main story some characters are not available at the start. Some Strawhat Pirates will gradually join your party as you progress through the main scenario and others might take leave.
