Gameplay Feature that Integrates the One Piece Timeline into the Game
The World of Memories is a major gameplay feature in One Piece Odyssey that allows players to dive into the One Piece universe where iconic characters, locations, and events in the manga and anime appear. As described on the game’s official website, this mechanic is intended to let fans of the acclaimed franchise experience the Straw Hat Pirates’ adventure from “a new angle” that sets it apart from the series canon.
One Piece Odyssey Story Preview
Odyssey’s events begin after Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates find themselves washed ashore on the mysterious Waford Island. Each member of the crew, including Luffy himself, is eventually deprived of their powers for causes yet to be revealed.
The Straw Hats soon realize that they can only recover their abilities with the help of Lim, a girl they meet on Waford who has the ability to transport people into worlds constructed out of their memories. These alternate dimensions, collectively known as “The World of Memories,” let each individual revisit their past and encounter familiar faces and events throughout the One Piece timeline.
Among the most notable events in the One Piece manga and anime that appears in the trailers for Odyssey is a section from the Marineford Arc. In Odyssey, Luffy is transported to a painful memory involving the death of his older brother Ace. Despite knowing the ordeal to be simply a “memory,” the young pirate captain vows to save his elder, knowing that he (Luffy) is “not alone this time.”
Can events in the series canon be altered?
As hinted in released media for the Odyssey, it may be possible to change the events within the One Piece continuity through The World of Memories given the different circumstances the characters face from the original narrative. While not confirmed, this gameplay feature could have the potential, for instance, to help Luffy rescue Ace which might set force a new chain of outcomes. Ace’s demise itself may be altered which may result in him joining the Straw Hats on their journey as a playable member of the party.
