Is One Piece Odyssey an original story?

One Piece Odyssey‘s story will be entirely original and will include new characters exclusive to the upcoming title. Despite this, Odyssey is expected to be a classic adventure characteristic of the One Piece franchise, with author Eiichiro Oda himself contributing to character and monster designs, as well as the main plot of the game.

A teaser of Odyssey’s narrative taken from the game’s official website reads:

“During their voyage along the Grand Line, Captain Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Crew are caught in a sudden storm at sea. When the storm subsides, they find themselves stranded on a lush, but mysterious island called Waford, becoming separated from each other in the process. The crew sets out on a new, daring adventure filled with marvels of nature, powerful enemies, and strange encounters with island locals. The World of Memories

Odyssey’s “The World of Memories” system will allow fans of the series to meet familiar friends and foes, revisit iconic locations, and relive milestone events throughout the One Piece timeline. This major gameplay feature is intended to let players experience the Straw Hat Pirates’ story depicted in the manga and anime from “a new angle.”

Is One Piece Odyssey canon?

While Odyssey integrates various characters and story elements from the manga and anime, its overall narrative is not part of the One Piece canon. A number of previously-released media under the One Piece franchise, which includes various other games and movies, have not been considered within the series continuity so this news is somewhat unsurprising.
