Hardware Performance Comparison (PS4, PS5, and PC) for Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE:4)

This page contains a comparison of hardware performance for Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE 4) on the Playstation 4 (PS4), Playstation 5 (PS5), and PC (via Steam), including key difference between each platform, information on achievable fps on each system, PC system requirements,  and other useful information.

Summary of Differences Between the PS4, PS5, and PC Versions (Graphical Performance)

Playstation 4 (PS4)
  • 60 fps (may occasionally dip below during gameplay)
  • Loading speed is slow
  • Least expensive platform
Playstation 5 (PS5)
  • 60 fps
  • Loading speed is fast
  • Mid- to high-cost (depending on availability of units in your region)
PC (via Steam)
  • 60 fps or higher (depending on hardware)
  • Supports keyboard and mouse controls
  • Mid- to high-cost (potentially the most expensive but allows for the best performance possible)

Unlike the PS4 and PS5 versions, Resident Evil 4 Remake on the PC (Steam) can achieve 144 fps to even up to 240 fps with high monitor refresh rate and top-of-the-line hardware.  If you have a PC and a PS5, try to play the demo and check if the former constantly dips below 60 fps. If it does, try playing the game on the PS5 instead.

In some instances, Resident Evil 4 Remake on the PS4 may drop below 60 fps, especially during cutscenes or moments where there are a lot of  elements moving individually on the screen. Apart from this, there are no other graphical issues that you should encounter while playing.

What is FPS?

Frame rate (fps) is a unit that represents the number of images displayed per second. A video is made by connecting image “frames” to each other. In context, 30 fps simply means that 30 images are displayed per second. In the same sense, 60 fps means 60 images are displayed per second. The higher the fps, the smoother the image displayed.

Resident Evil 4 Remake Game Overview

Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE:4) - Game Overview 1

Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE:4) is a current-generation console remake of Resident Evil 4 released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2. This modern version is scheduled for release on March 24, 2023, for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and Series S, and Microsoft Windows (Steam).

Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE:4) - Game Overview 2

Resident Evil 4 Remake follows the story of Special Agent Leon S. Kennedy who is sent on a mission to rescue the President of the United States’ daughter Ashley Graham after the latter is abducted by the violent Los Illuminados Cult based in village in Spain.

New Features and Gameplay Mechanics

Parry

Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE:4) - Mash Knife Stance (Parry)

A new parry action has been added that allows you to counter incoming enemy attacks using a knife. If done successfully, the foe’s attack will be interrupted, preventing you from taking damage. The remake even allows players to perform impressive feats such as parrying hurled projectiles (axes, knives, rocks, etc.) with enough practice and skills.

Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE:4) - Parry Projectiles

With good timing, it is also possible to execute a perfect parry which causes the enemy to flinch and be forced into a vulnerable state for a short period. During this time, you can run up to the target and throw out a melee attack to knock them down.

Knife Durability

Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE:4) - Knife Durability

Knife durability is a new mechanic in the game which indicates the condition of Leon’s Combat Knife. As you use the blade to attack, parry, or break free from an enemy’s grab, the weapon loses some of its durability. To restore the Combat Knife to its best condition, you must take it to the Weapons Merchant and have him repair it for a fee.

Failing to maintain the Combat Knife will cause it to break. This nearly-useless state prevents you from using the weapon effectively and makes parries unavailable in battle.

Crouching and Emergency Dodge

Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE:4) - Crouching

New crouch and emergency dodge actions have also been implemented in the remake. Press the ○ button lets you drop down low to the ground which is useful for hiding from view or avoiding attacks that mostly hit the upper body. Crouching can also be done to avoid the Parasite enemy’s sickle throw attack.

Emergency dodge, meanwhile, is an action that has appeared in recent remakes of Resident Evil games. This maneuver gives you an extra option to avoid getting hit and is generally useful for survivability throughout the game.

New Enemies

Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE:4) - New Enemy

New enemies not found in the original version of the game are also added in the remake. Among the unfamiliar foes is what appears to be a muscular Ganado wearing a cow’s head as a sort of grotesque mask. This new human enemy also wields a giant hammer and is expected to pose a difficult challenge when encountered during the main story.

New Weapons

Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE 4) - Sentinel Nine Handgun and Skull Shaker Shotgun (Extra DLC Pack)

New armaments such as the “Sentinel Nine” handgun and the “Skull Shaker” shotgun also appear in the game as bonuses for purchasing the Extra DLC Pack (included in the Resident Evil 4 Remake Digital Deluxe Edition and Collector’s Edition). A submachine that resembles the MP5 has been featured in one of the game’s official trailers as well.

New Merchant Requests

Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE:4) - Merchant Requests

New side missions called Merchant Requests can also be undertaken in the updated version of the game. Clearing these optional quests rewards you with Spinels, a rare type of currency that can be traded with the Weapons Merchant for useful equipment, supplies, and other items.

Item Crafting

Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE:4) - Crafting List

An item crafting system similar to those that appeared in previous Resident Evil titles has also been added to the remake. Using item recipes purchased at the Weapons Merchant, you will be able to make various healing items, ammunition, explosives, and other consumables from ingredients gathered throughout the game.

New Costumes

Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE:4) - Leon Casual Outfit Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE:4) - Leon Villain Outfit

New costumes for Leon, Ashley, and other major characters can be accessed in the 2023 version of the game. These include special bonus outfits unlocked for purchasing the Digital Deluxe or Collector’s Edition and those that become available for meeting certain conditions during the main story.

New Trophies and Achievements

The remake also has an updated list of trophies and achievements that set it apart from its source material. There are also new trophies unlocked for meeting certain objectives related to new content in this version of the game.

Japanese Voice Acting

The remake also features new Japanese voice acting that was previously unavailable in the 2005 release on the PlayStation 2. The Japanese cast includes Toshiyuki Morikawa as Leon S. Kennedy, Akari Kito as Ashley Graham, and Kenjiro Tsuda as Luis Serra.

  1. As a reader, I appreciate this article as it provides useful information about the hardware performance of Resident Evil 4 Remake on different platforms. I find the summary of differences between the PS4, PS5, and PC versions particularly helpful as it gives an overview of what to expect from each platform. I’m also glad that the article includes information on PC system requirements and the achievable fps on each system. However, I have a question about the loading speed on the PC version. Is it faster than the PS5 version or is it comparable? Overall, great job on this article and thank you for providing valuable insights for gamers who are deciding which platform to play Resident Evil 4 Remake on.
