This page contains a melee attacks guide for Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE 4), including how to do roundhouse kick and suplex melee follow-up moves, requirements and conditions to trigger close-combat attacks, and other useful tips.

What are Melee Attacks?

Melee attacks are special close-combat moves that you can perform on enemies after rendering them into a stunned or vulnerable state. Upon approaching an enemy, a melee attack prompt will be displayed above their head which indicates an opportunity to execute the special move.

Melee attacks are among the most useful offensive actions you can perform in battle the moves allow you to knock enemies down. You can then approach them and finish them off with knife or gun attacks before they get up for an easy kill.

Types of Melee Attacks (Leon)

Roundhouse Kick

Resident Evil 4 Remake - Roundhouse Kick Melee Attack

Leon’s standard melee attack when approaching vulnerable enemies from the front or from the side. This move will knock down most regular enemies, allowing you to finish them off using your knife or a gun as they lie on the ground.

Foes hit by the kick will fly a short distance away from Leon, making it possible to knock down nearby enemies as well. Try to position your melee attack so that it damages as many enemies as possible in battle.

Suplex

Resident Evil 4 Remake - Suplex Melee Attack

Leon’s most powerful melee attack that can only be performed when approaching enemies from behind. This move has a chance to instantly kill the target but will not have any effect on surrounding enemies.

Ways to Trigger Melee Attacks

Attack enemies by targeting their head or shins.

Resident Evil 4 Remake - How to Do Melee Attacks 1

You can trigger melee attacks by shooting enemies in the head or the knees. Doing the former causes them to reel in pain after getting hit in the face which gives you a chance to approach them to perform a melee attack.

Targeting your foes’ shins, meanwhile, will force them to kneel. This is another opportunity to execute a close-combat move before the opponent is able to recover.

Pull off perfect parries.

Resident Evil 4 Remake - How to Parry 1

Successfully executing perfect parries can also temporarily render an enemy into a helpless condition. To do perfect parries, you must press the L1 button in the exact window that the knife icon flashes white on the right side of the screen. Once the enemy starts to flail around from your counterattack, run up to them to follow-up with a melee attack.

Use flash grenades.

Resident Evil 4 Remake - Flash Grenade

The bright flash of light emitted by flash grenades is capable of stunning multiple enemies. As they are temporarily locked in this state, they are open to melee attacks. If you are fast enough, you may be able to knock down a few of your foes using close combat before any of them can come to and retaliate.

Other Tips for Doing Melee Attacks

Aim down the sights when targeting the head.

Resident Evil 4 Remake - How to Do Melee Attacks 2

Try to use your handgun’s sights when aiming at an enemy’s head. Doing so lets place your shot more accurately to make the foe flinch. You will also deal critical damage to the target when you shoot them in the head, allowing you to get more out of each bullet used.

Dash forward to avoid missing out on the melee attack window.

Resident Evil 4 Remake - How to Do Melee Attacks 3

As soon as you render the enemy in a vulnerable state, quickly sprint towards them before they can recover. This habit will prevent you from missing out on the chance to do a melee attack so try to practice dashing around as often as possible.

Aim roundhouse kicks towards groups of enemies.

Aiming your roundhouse kick so that your target flies toward other enemies makes it possible to knock them down as well. Doing so gives you some room to breath or a chance to make a quick escape if you are at risk of getting surrounded by Ganados throughout the game.
