What is Parrying?
Parrying is a new mechanic introduced in Resident Evil 4 Remake that was not present in the original Playstation 2 version released in 2005. By equipping the knife, Leon can quickly intercept and counter an enemy’s attack, giving him a chance to follow-up with a roundhouse kick to knock them down.
Resident Evil 4 Remake (Biohazard RE 4) Melee Attacks Guide
Parrying is an extremely useful skill to learn as it allows you to take down most enemies without resorting to guns that require ammunition. Being proficient at parrying will allow you to save your ammo for more difficulty encounters such as bosses or against waves of Ganado throughout the main story.
How to Perform a Parry
To do a parry, equip your knife and face the enemy. Then, wait until your foe winds up an attack while looking at the knife icon on the lower right corner of the screen. When the icon flashes white, press the L1 button. If done correctly, your opponent will be interrupted as they reel in pain from your counterattack.
Perfect Parry
A perfect parry is done by repelling a foe’s attack at the exact moment the knife icon lights up. Successfully pulling off a perfect parry causes the target to lose their balance and become temporarily vulnerable to a roundhouse kick follow-up attack.
Attacks that Can be Parried
Melee attacks using weapons and bare fists can be parried with good timing. With good timing, it is even possible to deflect hurled objects such as axes and rocks which were usually shot down using guns in the original version of the game.
Attacks that Cannot be Parried
Grab attacks cannot be parried. Because of this, try to run away, dodge, or switch to a gun when your foe goes for a grab. Certain bosses will also throw out special attacks that cannot be countered using the knife so try to remember which moves you can deflect or avoid in the game.
Parrying reduces the knife’s durability.
Your knife’s durability goes down as you perform parries. Eventually, you will need to have the weapon repaired at the Weapons Merchant (shop) for a fee. Be sure to always keep your blade in good condition whenever you get a chance to stop by the shop.

At 0 durability, the knife will break. This will prevent you from executing parries until the weapon is fixed again.
Other Important Mechanics for Parrying
You cannot parry in the middle of your own attack.
There is no way to perform a parry mid-swing. Because of this, avoid attacking carelessly with the knife, especially when up against multiple enemies coming from all directions.
You can perform consecutive parries.
It is possible to parry multiple attacks as long as you are facing the direction of enemies and have recovered from your previous counterattack. Note that the knife’s durability will go down faster this way so an eye on your weapon’s condition at all times during battle.
You can parry Chainsaw Man’s attacks.
When fighting Chainsaw Man, the parry prompt is displayed in the middle of the screen instead of on the right side. This makes it somewhat easier to counter Chainsaw Man, though the consequences of failing are much greater due to the massive damage he can dish out with his weapon.
Mash knife stance for difficulty situations.
You can mash the knife stance button if you are having problems timing an enemy’s attacks. This is useful as a sort of panic button against multiple enemies that give you almost no room to accurately time each of their strikes.
