Steps to Recruit Byleth

Can Be Recruited in Chapter 10 or Chapter 12 (Missable)

Byleth is encountered in one of the battle stages in Chapter 10 or later on any route (Scarlet Blaze, Azure Gleam, or Golden Wildfire). You will know when Byleth will appear when you receive a notification that says “Your actions in this battle will greatly impact the outcome of the story.”

Story Route Byleth Chapter Appearance
Scarlet Blaze (Black Eagles) Chapter 10
Azure Gleam (Blue Lions) Chapter 12
Golden Wildfire (Golden Deer) Chapter 10

Upon beginning the mission, progress through the map until you see Byleth. Afterwards, simply retreat to the starting location when the game tells you to avoid pursuing him/her. Then, simply focus on your main mission objectives as normal and ignore Arval’s suggestion to challenge Byleth.

A new enemy should appear in the far end of the map, prompting a secret side mission. Head to the area and defeat the new enemy before Byleth reaches it to recruit him/her. Jeralt will also join you upon meeting these conditions.

How to Recruit Jeralt

Warning: Failing to follow the steps indicated above and choosing to fight Byleth will lock you out of obtaining him/her (as well as Jeralt and Arval) for the rest of the playthrough.

Required to Recruit Arval after Beating the Game

It should be noted that Arval can only be recruited in New Game Plus (NG+) if Byleth and Jeralt join you in your previous playthrough. Failing to do so will also lock you out of recruiting Arval after beating the game.
