Scientist Ethan Winters: Umbrella’s Elite Researcher [Resident Evil 7/ RE7]

Ethan Winters looks like an ordinary guy. But there's something that doesn't add up. Why would he rush to the Duvley House? Other than his wife's spooky call, why rush over to a haunted house when someone's already dead? And how does he survive in a place that barely has anything to his advantage?

We thought he was ordinary…

Ethan Winters appeared to be an ordinary citizen. At the start of the game, he was recalling the call he received from his allegedly dead wife Mia. However, there seems to be something off about him being so “ordinary”. Of all people, why him? Why someone so ordinary? In fact, nothing pointed out that he was a scientist on first sight. It doesn’t make sense for someone like him unless…

He wasn’t who we thought he was.

Ethan Winters, the Ordinary Protagonist

Unlike the other Resident Evil characters, he had no combat training. He had nothing that allowed him to go Rambo on all the crazy Bakers out to get him. He didn’t know how to throw knives and, nothing about breaking people’s necks either. All he probably does know how to do is fix a car, a toilet, and go to his regular 9AM – 6PM job like everyone else.

Ethan Winters, Umbrella Scientist

Now, here’s something a little weird. Ethan Winters knows how to mix chemicals. In the game, he shows the ability to mix and create items through chemicals. Now, everyone knows that chemistry is not for everybody. The only basic chemistry we’re probably willing to learn is how to cook in hopes of not burning water. But the thing is, how does he know certain chemicals and how does he know what it could possibly turn into? Where in the world did he possibly get that knowledge?

That’s thing; we at least confirm that Ethan’s no idiot. But the thing is, there’s another item that may confirm his involvement with Umbrella. And not just any ordinary employee, he could be an elite scientist that was involved in the Progenitor Virus experiment. And how do we know this? There’s an item you find in Spencer’s notebook with a list of names.

And it shows here a certain Ethan W. with Level 9 clearance and was considered a “scientist” on the list. Meaning one thing, if this Ethan W. is Ethan Winters, that proves that the protagonist is not some ordinary clerk sitting on the desk. He was strolling through the halls in a white lab coat as one of the top scientists of Umbrella. But why does it say he’s dead? For all we know, he pulled off a Hawkeye. Kept his ordinary citizen life and his marriage off the books and the databases, and if anyone tried to find him – he was dead. So, nobody would dare try to find him.

Ethan Winters in Hiding

If this theory pans out, it would explain a lot of things. It would also dawn another theme of fear: the fear of having your past catch up to you. If Ethan wanted to live a normal life, he was sorely mistaken. With his high profile position in Umbrella as a Level 9-clearance Scientist, that kind of past would chase him to the ends of the Earth if it had to. During his tenure in Umbrella, he became a valuable asset. An asset that Umbrella would dare not let go.

  1. That is nice, but the thing is that Ethan has a backstory. He worked and an engineer before the Louisiana incident

  2. Yeah, I back this a lot. I feel this way too because *spoilers* when Redfield jumps out to make his little introduction, Ethan casually says, “What took you guys so long?” as if he were talking to people he knew or was working with. I don’t know. I just have a burning passion for Ethan not to be useless xD

    • I know right? So true. It would explain a lot especially how he knew how to mix those chemicals and how he interacted with Redfield. He literally skipped the whole “who-are-you” debacle. 😮

  3. I find it funny that nobody is remembering Chris and Claire stealing an Umbrella helicopter in Code: Veronica. Why would he have gotten rid of it? The paint on the chopper was all worn and old, and the Umbrella logo was blue, which was the color of the Antarctic Division of Umbrella. It was Chris. And as sad as it is for me to say, Umbrella has been finished since RE3, they are gone. Even in RE6 Neo-Umbrella was a terrorist group. Chris drops you his modified Samurai Edge which ONLY he could have. It was modified because he is with the BSAA and he killed Wesker. So naturally a bio-weapon slaying machine like Chris is going to have a bad-ass weapon, hence his modified Samurai Edge that he named Albert. As far as the theory about Ethan, very very interesting. However, Ethan is in his 30’s max in this game, seeing as how it takes place roughly after RE6, he would have been an Umbrella scientist when he was a very young child lol. I dont find that likely. However the picture of the note with the name is interesting. I guess we will find out more in RE8.

    • Definitely. Either in RE8 or in the latest expansion. After all, we just saw him being hauled away in a helicopter. :))

      • Well this is interesting.. i dont think the Ethan w in the notebook is coincidence.. theres a plan here. Thats why they tell us so little of ethan ..part of their plan lol i mean who comes to rescue him ? Of all people.. chris Redfield lol hmm

        • The whole relationship with Ethan Winters and Chris Redfield might even go ala John Wick. Like, Chris Redfield may be the reason as to why Ethan Winters was able to go underground or vice versa due to some event that happened between them. 😮

  4. SPOILERS for Resident Evil 7 below…

Something else interesting to note is the Umbrella operatives talking on the radio about Ethan, who they refer to as “him” with a certain degree of wariness and familiarity. In addition to his chemistry know-how, Ethan also has weapons training.
    .
He’s also shockingly immune to Eveline’s mind control, which is confirmed three-fold in the game through the following: 1) Eveline’s order for Mia to kill Ethan outright in the opening guest house sequence when he won’t join the family (which we don’t actually learn about until the moment replays during the ending); 2) Eveline’s inability to take over Ethan’s mind even when he’s incapacitated and buried in mold — in fact, he was able to communicate lucidly with the real Bakers in a mental “safe room” of sorts; 3) The failure of Eveline’s hallucinations to stop Ethan from injecting her with the Necrotoxin-E.
    .
Furthermore, Ethan’s sole motivation is finding Mia and getting answers about what happened to her. He cares almost nothing about the experiments, B.O.W.s, and Eveline. Only someone already familiar with B.O.W. research and its mutations could be so laissez-faire about wandering through a house of monstrosities.
    .
But the most compelling evidence is the appearance of “Redfield” at the end of the game. If that’s him we hear on the radio earlier, his talk of shooting witnesses doesn’t jibe with the Chris Redfield we know, nor does his riding in an Umbrella chopper, playing clean-up crew. This is either a different Redfield, or no Redfield at all.
    .
I believe this character is in fact someone Resident Evil fans know well: Umbrella’s super-soldier, HUNK, AKA “Mr. Death.” He’s using Redfield’s name to lull Ethan into a false sense of security towards Umbrella, as presumably now that Spencer and Wesker are dead, Ethan should be able to come out of hiding. However, Ethan obviously still distrusts Umbrella, or else Mia wouldn’t have had to lie about taking the Eveline job. This is why Mr. Death instead utilizes the reputation of a world-renowned do-gooder and anti-B.O.W. hero like Chris Redfield to get Ethan onto that chopper.
    .
That chopper, I might add, being one of HUNK’s signatures, along with his gas mask — which he’s wearing initially — his work for Umbrella doing B.O.W. clean-up, and his light hair and stubble, which we can clearly see in the only other official reveal of the character’s face: http://i.imgur.com/YXfwsLD.jpg.

There’s way more to the Resident Evil 7 story than meets the eye. I hope they elucidate it further with the DLC, but if not, I’m okay with all of this being left to theories and speculation. It’s lots of fun that way!

    • Yeah, I definitely agree, DL! Somehow, I felt that Resident Evil 7 left too many questions unanswered. The fact that Ethan survived her infection for so long is one and even the creation of Eveline leaves so many mysteries that RE7 left unanswered. Hopefully, Capcom will answer those questions. 🙂

    • Only the radio conversation says they ‘see no survivors’, not ‘leave none’. I’ve seen people claim Ethan says ‘help me find Mia and I’ll work for you again’ at the start of the game.

People are just making details in their head when nearly every combat encounter has him disgusted or shocked. He’s no employee of Umbrella.

That guy at the end has a Chris look to him if you compare his face to RE6 Redfield, and Umbrella has a new logo. Either Chris is bad now or Umbrella is good as a form of attonement for its past.

The only fact is Wesker’s group teamed with an Umbrella rival in 2000 to start a new BOW project that culminated with Eveline.

      • After playing the game, we now know that he isn’t that kind of guy. It was a speculation. After all, who is Ethan W. on the list? Who knows? It may come out in the new DLC coming out! 😉
