Like A Dragon: Ishin - Cooking Guide

Cooking is one of the mini games tied to the Like A Dragon: Ishin! (LAD Ishin/Yakuza: Ishin) Another Life side story section. You will occasionally get orders to cook and deliver specific types of food to be able to progress through paying off Haruka’s debt.

Food can also be eaten to gain various temporary buffs in battle. This makes cooking very useful throughout the game whether you want to meet orders through trading or need additional boosts during tough encounters.

How to Cook Meals

You can start cooking by interacting with the kitchen at Ryoma’s villa upon unlocking Another Life in Chapter 4 of the game’s main story.

Cooking Mini Game Cycle

Preparing food during the cooking mini game consists of four types of steps. The tasks needed to cook a dish varies greatly for each type of recipe.

Step Details
Cutting The process of chopping the raw ingredients. You must time your button presses in a rhythm correctly (watch for when the “○” and “x” button indicators appear). The speed of cutting increases as you progress through this process.
Seasoning The process of pouring the seasoning into the pot. You need to watch the gauge on the left side of the screen to help you add the right amount of sauce to the dish. When the gauge approaches the optimum amount, let go of the ○ button to stop.
Boiling The process of boiling the ingredients. Press ○ repeatedly to blow on the bamboo tube and air more air to the fire.
Grilling The process of cooking the dish on a grill. During this process, sparks will appear on the dish. Watch for when the large spark appears and press the ○ button to stop grilling.

Taste Test (Haruka)

Once you are done cooking, Haruka will taste the dish. If the dish is good, Haruka will tilt her head a little and say that it is good. You will also obtain the completed dish in your inventory as well as be rewarded with some Virtue.

If the dish is bad, Haruka will start to cough. Your Virtue will slightly be decreased whenever you fail to make a decent meal. The ingredients you use are also wasted in the process. If this happens, just reload your last save and begin cooking again.

Special Meals

Food that you prepared very well will be indicated by the “special” label. These dishes have greater beneficial effects than normal, making them extremely handy against bosses and other challenging enemies you need to take down during the main story.

How to Get New Recipes

You can learn new types of dishes to make by talking to various NPCs in the game or by purchasing the different kitchen upgrades from the Shinto Priest Virtue exchange shop.
