Know the best skills to get at the start of the game.

When starting the main story, it is important to unlock skills that will help you during the early stages. Most story chapters require you to clear challenging battles against bosses to progress further so you should have the right abilities at your disposal when you encounter them.

Skill Name Details
Enhance Great Sword Strike (Sword) Increases damage output with a single sword (starting weapon) by extending combo to max.
Mugenbo Knowledge (Sword) Allows you to immediately go into a guard after your guard is broken by the enemy, universally useful regardless of your weapon.
Komaki Dharma Evasion (Hand to Hand) Allows easier dodging, universally useful regardless of your weapon.

Attack enemies from behind.

Positioning is important, especially when taking on various bosses. Try to get behind your opponent as often as possible as they will be unable to guard your incoming attacks.

A good way to do this is to time your dodge just as your enemy winds up to hit you then dodge at the last second through them (either to the left or right). If done correctly, you should end up close to their rear. Quickly get in a few hits before they recover and anticipate their next attack again.

Break the enemy’s guard.

Learning to break the enemy’s guard will also help you in taking down bosses in the game. If you decide to engage your opponent head-on they will shell up. This is your opportunity to break their guard, leaving them temporarily open to follow up attacks. Be warned that enemies can also use guard break attacks that can render you defenseless as well.

Clear Sub Stories as often as you can.

During the early stages of the main story, try to do Sub Stories as soon as they become available. In general, you want clear just enough to earn you at least 36 Ryo (or more if you constantly purchase healing items from shops). This is to allow you to start farming money at the Chicken Race Arena which becomes accessible in Chapter 3.

Farm money as early as Chapter 3 to buy the Golden at the Gambling Hall.

Once you reach Chapter 3 of the main story, the Chicken Race Arena will be unlocked. This area allows you to participate in the Chicken Race mini to earn lots of money early on by exploiting manual saves. Try to farm enough money to purchase the powerful Golden Gun at the Gambling Hall. This pistol boasts impressive damage output which will make battles against most regular enemies significantly easier.

Farm Virtue.

Virtue is a special type of currency in the game obtained from raising your bond (relationship) with various non-player characters (NPCs), eating at restaurants, clearing Sub Stories (side quests), and other activities. You can then spend your accumulated virtue at Shinto Priest Shrines to gain access to useful items or skills.

Unlock the Virtue Gain Increase perks from Virtue Exchange as soon as possible.

You can increase the Virtue gained from various tasks you complete by purchasing the Virtue Gain Increase perks from the Virtue Exchange. Doing so makes it easier to farm Virtue throughout the game, especially when selling off Platinum Plates at Ebisuya.

Try to focus on two combat styles only during the main story.

It is recommended to focus on two combat styles while going through the main story. The reason for this is that switching between three or more styles will cause you to level any of them up much slower than just maining two. In Like A Dragon: Ishin, your combat style will rank up the more you use it. Doing so will also let you earn Soul Spheres that you can use to unlock and upgrade abilities in the game.
