This page contains a guide on Fishing in Final Fantasy XV, including strategies and tips and tricks.
Fishing Skill
Available at the start of the game, Noctis will be able to catch fish at once using basic tools at fishing spots all across Eos. The most accessible fishing spot at the start is Vannath Coast on the beach of Galdin Quay. You can also choose to do Navyth’s sidequest that involve catching certain types of fish across different fishing spots in Eos.
Fishing Controls
Input Commands | Description |
---|---|
Left Analog Stick | Aim; after casting pull the line in any direction |
X Button | Cast |
Circle Button | Quit |
R2 Button | Reel In |
Start Button | Open the Tackle Menu to change your equipment |
Fish Battles
When you get a bite, a duel with the fish will ensue. While the most obvious task is to reel in the catch, you also have to be mindful of your lines durability.
- Fish Bite: As soon as a fish takes your bait, tilt the left analog stick in the direction indicated on the screen. If you miss this chance, the fish will just swim away.
- Reeling In: To reel in your catch, hold the R2 button. This will gradually decrease the fish’s stamina. When it runs empty, you’ve caught the fish.
- Tension: Fish that have bitten constantly swim at a particular direction and may change course abruptly. Remember to always tilt the analog stick to the direction that the fish is swimming. Otherwise, tension may build up on your fishing line and will eventually break. This is the most crucial factor of fishing in Final Fantasy XV. You need to quickly adjust to the direction that fish move, while reeling in quick bursts. Keeping in mind your line’s tension and the fish’s stamina must always be prioritized.
- Fish Attacks: Occasionally, a fish may jump out of the water and into the air. When it does, move the left analog stick in the direction indicated on the screen to avoid damage to your line and to lower the fish’s stamina.
Fishing Equipment
- Lines: Lines vary in terms of durability. They may sometimes be obtained throughout your travels, through many shops in Eos have them for sale. Be mindful of the power a particular fish has to be able to select the right kind of line to use.
- Rods: The most important attribute of rods are their defense. This determines how well a rod reduces damage done to your line. Rods with better defense are obtained in shops and as you progress further in Navyth’s Sidequests.
- Reels: Reels determine your attack attribute. This is how quickly you can tire a fish out until you can catch it. Various reels are obtained in shops, while the best one is obtained as a reward in the Totomostro mini-game.
- Lures: Various lures are available in the game. The important factors to consider when choosing which lure to use are: Lure Type (Popper lures for fish near the surface, Pencil lures for fishing at dawn or dusk, Swisher lures for bringing sleepy fishing spots to life, Crankbait lures for fishing in spots with many underwater obstacles, Minnow lures for clear water and Vibration lures for fishing in wide areas), Lure Weight (the heavier the lure, the deeper it will sink in the water), and Lure Color (fish are generally attracted to a color closer to their own).
Skill Level
When you successfully catch a fish, you will receive skill points. The total awared skill points depend on the quality of the catch. You will level up when you reach specific milestones. When you level up, you will enjoy a bonus for all future fishing trips.
