What are Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth?
Orbs of mako that can be equipped to gain new magic spells, abilities, and passive effects in battle.
Materia are a type of equipment in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth which are essentially crystallized orbs of mako energy. Materia can be slotted in weapons and armor to allow characters to cast new magic spells, use special abilities, or gain various passive effects in battle.
Types of Materia
There are five (5) types of materia in the game which are magic, command, support, complete, and summon materia. The effects of equipping each materia are summarized in the table below.
Materia | Effects |
---|---|
Magic Materia | Green-colored magic materia grant access to various magic. Spells gained from equipping magic materia range from applying elemental damage or negative effects and debuffs on enemies to healing, reviving, and bestowing buffs on allies or removing status ailments from them. |
Command Materia | Yellow-colored command materia grant access to useful abilities in battle. Among the skills you gain from equipping command materia include analyzing enemy elemental affinities, stealing items from foes, and even learning unique enemy abilities. |
Support Materia | Blue-colored support materia modify or synergize with the effects of other materia that they are linked with. Support materia can improve the potency of various spells, grant a character’s equipment resistance to certain magic, apply elemental damage to weapons, and a variety of other useful effects. |
Complete Materia | Purple-colored complete materia grant different beneficial passive effects in battle. Complete materia effects range from granting a character boosts to various parameters, improving ATB gain through certain actions, and even increasing the amount of EXP and gil obtained after defeating enemies. |
Summon Materia | Red-colored summon materia grant the ability to call forth Summons that fight alongside the party for a fixed duration. In addition gaining the ability to invoke such powerful creatures, characters also gain increased stats based on the summon materia equipped. |
How to Use Materia
Can be equipped from the main menu under Materia & Equipment.
You can equip various materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth by going to Materia & Equipment from the game’s main menu. Afterwards, select a party member whose equipment and materia you want to customize.
Once you are at the character equipment screen, press the △ button to edit the character’s materia loadout.
Materia can only be equipped on empty slots found in weapons and armor. Accessories do not have materia slots so it is impossible to set any materia on them.
How to Get Materia
Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is obtained through a number of ways as listed below.
Automatically obtained during main story chapters.
Some materia are acquired automatically by simply progressing through the game’s main story chapters. Because of this, these materia are essentially unmissable as specific events in certain story quests prevent you from not obtaining them to progress through the chapter’s objectives.
Found as loot from specific locations or treasure chests.
You can also get materia by looting them from specific areas in the game’s different maps or obtaining them from treasure chests. To avoid missing out on any materia in the game, try scouring every nook and cranny whenever you gain access to a new location during the main story.
Purchased from shops.
Some materia can also be bought from shops in various towns, cities, and other non-combat zones. Materia sold at shops can be purchased with Gil, the game’s main form of currency.
Exchanged for region data points via Materia Development.
There are also materia that can only be obtained from the Materia Development service offered by Chadley. By trading region data points (DP) accumulated from clearing Combat Assignments and other World Intel-related activities, you will be able to purchase materia that could not be acquired through any other means.
Rewarded in Combat Simulator challenges.
You can also get materia as rewards for clearing challenges from Chadley’s Combat Simulator. These optional battle missions require you to take down waves of enemies and are also good ways to practice fighting a variety of enemy types throughout the game.

Most summon materia are obtained this way as you must defeat them in virtual simulations to be able to invoke them in battle.

Finally, there are also materia that only be acquired for clearing other optional activities such as side quests (Odd Jobs), progressing through certain collection-related objectives, playing various mini games, or meeting specific conditions during the game’s story chapters.
