Game Overview
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is an adventure/real-time strategy game developed by Vanillaware, known for visually stunning titles such as Odin Sphere, GrimGrimoire, and Dragon’s Crown.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim combines visual novel style gameplay with real-time strategy mechanics that focus on the stories of 13 different characters. The game is set in a fictional version of Japan during the Showa period, including certain events during World War II, and the future.
Game Story
The game’s story revolves around the interactions of 13 individuals amid mankind’s desperate battle against gigantic monsters called Kaijuu. To defend Japan’s cities against the invaders, massive robots known as Sentinels have been deployed which are piloted by many of the game’s main characters.
Gameplay
Gameplay is divided into three distinct sections which are Adventure, Battle, and Archives.
1) Adventure
The Adventure section is where exploration, events, and character interaction happen. This feature is played in a side-scrolling style, allowing players to visit locations and talk to other characters. Dialogue choices also appear here which affect subsequent events.
Each of the characters have distinct storylines that can be played to build the game’s main narrative. Other playable characters and non-playable ones are encountered in each storyline, though these interactions depend on your chosen character.
2) Battle
The Battle section adopts a real-time strategy style where players must pilot Sentinels to fend off a wave of Kaiju attacking defense hubs throughout Japan. Up to six characters can be used during battles and must prevent the Kaiju from destroying their assigned defense points. The game can be paused to issue execute more specific commands, allowing for a variety of strategies and approaches amid constantly changing situations in battle.
Four types of sentinels can be used in the game, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Units differ in terms of their mobility, attack range, and effectiveness against flying or grounded enemies. Players must take these factors into account when engaging various types of Kaijuu during Battle.
3) Archives
The Archive section documents characters, events, and items encountered thus far in the main story. Players can view information here to gain a better sense of the elements making up the game’s main narrative.
