Game Overview

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster - Game Overview

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster (真・女神転生III-NOCTURNE), is a single-player, turn-based role-playing game developed and published by Atlus. Nocturne was initially released for the PlayStation 2 last 2003 in Japan and 2004 worldwide. Nocturne has multiple versions such as the Maniax edition that featured Dante from Capcom’s Devil May Cry series and the Chronicle Edition that featured Raidou from Atlus’ Devil Summoner: Kuzunoha Raidou vs. King Abbadon game. The HD Remaster version will be released in May 2021. It will be based on the Chronicle Edition but will include Dante as a purchasable DLC to replace Raidou as a guest character in the game.

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster - Game Overview

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne is actually the fifth installment of the Shin Megami Tensei (SMT) series. Despite being labeled as “III”,  SMT If and SMT Nine came out prior to its initial release. SMT 3: Nocturne was highly favored by SMT fans and it generated good sales on its debut release. It took almost a decade for a true addition to coming out following Shin Megami Tensei II.

Story

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster - Story

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster is set in a demon-infested, post-apocalyptic world on the brink of a rebirth called Conception. The new world is called the Vortex World and the Protagonist changed from a young boy into a Demi-fiend, a being that has a body of a demon and a heart of a human. The young Protagonist begins his journey throughout post-apocalyptic Tokyo in order to survive. He also acquires powers called Magatamas and recruits Demon allies along the way. In the later stages of the game, the Protagonist must choose his Reason that determines how the world will become.

Gameplay

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster - Demi-Fiend

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster shares similar elements from Persona games while having its own unique Gameplay Systems as well. Here is a quick summary of Nocturne’s unique gameplay:

Magatama

Magatamas are living parasites that the Protagonist uses to power himself against enemy Demons. They function similarly to loadouts containing a specific armor type, weapon, skills, and spells. There are 25 Magatamas that can be acquired in the game. Each Magatama has its own strengths and weaknesses so the player is not encouraged to stick to one type of Magatama only. Magatamas must be equipped and leveled up to unlock more skills.

Press Turn System

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster - Press Turn System

The game features a unique battle system called the “Press Turn System”. The Press Turn System builds on the foundation of traditional turn-based combat and adds a new element in the form of a “Press Turn”. A “Press Turn” represents a regular turn or an action point for each party member and foe. Regular turns can be in the form of using normal attacks, using physical or magic skills, casting buffs, landing debuffs, consuming items, or recalling/summoning Demon allies.

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster - Battle System Boost Allies

The Protagonist must be tactical in his approach and execute complex moves in order to keep his party’s Press Turns from running out. These moves include landing Critical Hits, exploiting Elemental Weaknesses, or Regular Turn passes. When the player keeps executing these complex moves, it will consume half Press Turns instead. If your party ran out of Press Turns and unable to clear all enemies, they will also take advantage of this system against you and your party. Take note that when you missed some of your attacks, two Press Turns will be consumed instead of one as a form of punishment.

Demons

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster - Demons

In Shin Megami Tensei, “Personas” are referred to as “Demons”. The term “Demon” came up first before “Persona” since Shin Megami Tensei (SMT) is the main series while the Persona series is a spin-off of SMT despite becoming a huge JRPG franchise of its own. Similar to Arcana’s, Demons in the game are also organized by groups. This time by two categories namely Alignment and Race.

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster - Demon NPC

Demons are initially encountered as foes throughout the Vortex World but they can also be recruited as allies. Some Demons will appear in the game as NPCs and a few can engage you to battle when you choose to interact with them. As you progress in the main story, enemy Demons will become more complex and harder to defeat alone.

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster - Demon Recruitment

It is encouraged to talk to some of these Demons and find an understanding in between. Rarely Demons will initiate and join your party. Most of the time, they will negotiate with the Protagonist based on their own terms such as through bribery in terms of giving out Macca (the game’s currency) or consumable items. Other Demons can be recruited by other means like through philosophical questions.

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster - Demon Recruited

When Demons are recruited they can be placed as party members. You can have three Demons active in your party and they can also be recalled back to the Protagonist’s Demon Stock in order to give space for another Demon summon. Similar to your main character, these Demons have HP and MP bars that are needed to be sustained prior to and during the battle.
