Game Overview

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion - Game Overview Banner

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is a remaster of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 released in 2007 for the Playstation Portable (PSP). This modern port of the prequel to one of the most beloved entries in the Final Fantasy series features enhanced visuals and improved gameplay for current-generation platforms.

New Features

Trophies and Achievements

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion - Game Overview 1

Crisis Core: Reunion has a full set of trophies and achievements that players can unlock throughout the game’s main story. Among these are those obtained automatically through each story chapter, those unlocked through optional collectibles, and those received for performing specific feats in and out of combat.

Enhanced Visuals

The game’s visuals have also been updated for current-generation platforms. Players will again be able to experience the prequel to one of the most beloved entries in the Final Fantasy series with updated graphics for characters, explorable environments, and special effects triggered by various abilities like magic and techniques.

New Summon Cinematics

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion - Odin Summon

New cutscenes when invoking Summons have also been included in Crisis Core: Reunion, fleshing out each of their unique designs and characteristics much more vividly than those found in the PSP release. Players can expect to see iconic creatures such as Ifrit, Bahamut, and Odin make more cinematic entrances when Zack calls them in battle.

Updated Combat System

Battle UI

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion - Battle 1

Crisis Core: Reunion’s battle UI has largely been revamped and now has a similar look to the one found in Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Actions available to Zack are now displayed on the upper right corner of the screen while the Digital Mind Wave (DMW) slots and status indicators (HP, MP, and AP) have undergone more modern redesigns as well.

Battle Stances and Buster Sword Proficiency

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion - Counter

The game’s combat system has been improved with the inclusion of Battle Stances once players have acquired the Buster Sword. This allows Zack to adapt his fighting style against various enemies by pressing the □ + x buttons (Playstation 4 and Playstation 5) during battle.

Zack can now also accumulate Buster Sword Proficiency as he takes down foes using the iconic weapon. Raising his skills with the Buster Sword will allow him to unlock its true potential in battle and is indicated by a percentage value on the right side of the screen.

The addition of the Battle Stances and Buster Sword Proficiency mechanics are likely adapted from Cloud’s unique ability to switch sword styles in Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Mapping Combat Actions

Crisis Core: Reunion will now let players assign Magic, Commands, and Items to specific buttons as an improvement to its action-style combat. In the original version of the game, cycling through all available battle actions was done by pressing the L1 and R1 buttons which proved to be quite frustrating to some.

New Voiced Dialogue

New voiced dialogue have also been included in the game which were previously simply read text in the PSP release. Players can expect to hear characters like Young Yuffie, Kunsel, and various other supporting cast deliver their lines in the updated version of the game.

New Voice Actors

Many of the game’s main characters, including Zack himself, are not performed by their original English voice actors. This may be a disappointment for fans of the original game but may not be much of an issue to those who will be playing through the prequel for the first time.

Most of the original Japanese cast, however, will reprise their roles in Crisis Core: Reunion.

Updated Music Arrangements

The game’s various tracks have also undergone new arrangements by composer Takeharu Ishimoto who worked on the 2007 version’s music. Memorable tracks like Encounter, Chaotic Battlefield, and enduring fan favorite The Price of Freedom evoke warm nostalgia for those who have played through the original game.
