Strategy

Patience is the key to defeating Rockbreakers. Well, that, and standing on top of rock outcroppings. These huge Machines only spend part of their time above ground, preferring to tunnel underground instead using their massive digging arms. A Rockbreaker that’s underground can burst out under Aloy’s location, inflicting serious damage through the three spinning buzzsaws in its mouth. Once it pops out, it can spit out rocks in a wide area.

Aloy can dodge the boulders that Rockbreakers spit out, but she has to move back from the rocks instead of dodging to the sides, as the Machine spits out rocks in a wide, but relatively narrow arc.

The first thing to do when battling Rockbreakers is to take out their digging arms. Score hits on the Machine’s arms using either Shock bombs (its weakness) or tearblast arrows to rip off as much armor as possible and uncover more weaknesses. Once destroyed, the Rockbreaker won’t be able to tunnel underground.

You can also focus a Frost-based offense on the body of the Rockbreaker to slow it down.

Some more weak spots for Rockbreakers are the fuel sac located on their underside, and the exhaust port on their back. Both weak spots have no particular vulnerabilities, so Aloy can use any arrow in her arsenal to deal damage. The Rockbreaker even makes things a bit easier for you by emerging from the ground with their underside exposed and just asking for a well-placed arrow shot.
