This article contains tips and tricks how to level up in Horizon Zero Dawn.

How  do you level up in Horizon Zero Dawn?

In Horizon Zero Dawn, it’s an open world that relies on survival and accomplishing quests. That’s pretty much how you level up. However, some quests may sometimes block another incoming quest depending on what you’re playing. There are side quests and also main quests which give you exp, resources, and also good weapons  for you to work with while playing.

So, how do you level up and not give yourself a headache while doing so? Here are some tips:

Finish the side quests for quick EXP and bonus skill points

In Horizon Zero Dawn, there’s a truck load of things for you to do. You can devastate a camp, go find something for a person, and many other quests. Sometimes, these side quests may be in line or heading the same direction as the main quest. The detours called “side quests” may help you along the way. Some of the side quests reward weapons and resources for crafting and surviving the wild.

If you’re going to check out the area for side quests, access your menu. There should be some side quests you can knock off your to-do list. Or if you don’t have any, there’s a map for you to check out. While the loot may be low, it doesn’t mean it’s not profitable. It still gives a stack of EXP and some bonus skill points to help you master your skills.

Use Concentration for precise shooting

For precise shooting, Concentration is essential. Activate it using R3 (right thumbstick) while aiming a bow (L2). With that, time will slow. This allows you to hit smaller and faster moving targets. This works increasing well with fast moving creatures such as Glinthawks and Watchers or large but very dangerous, increasingly armoured machines with small weak spots such as Thunderjaw and the Snapmaw.

If you have this skill, it’s going to save your life. It can be upgraded with two support skills: concentration+ and fast reload. Not only does it increase the duration of the skill, it speeds up weapon use. Thus, indirectly affecting your damage output in combat. When synergized together, these skills become a difficulty slider in Horizon Zero Dawn.

Another good addition to your skill is the Hunter Reflexes Skill. This works well also with those using Concentration as it provides similar effect when you shoot your arrows. Because of this, it means you never need to wait for Concentration to recharge. Hop or slide, you’ll be back in action even on cool-down.

Slaughter everything.

Yes, you read right. Slaughter everything.

Running around in Horizon Zero Dawn, you can swing your spear at anything. Be it foxes, raccoons, boar, turkeys, and rabbits. Cast away your conscience. They’re digital. If they were real then, I’d understand why you’d cry a bucket load of tears.

But the thing is, animal parts are required to craft inventory upgrades. You need to expand your inventory if you want to carry more ammo and consumables. Some of the later upgrades require rare (blue) items like bones and skins instead of the usual common (grey) and uncommon (green) drops. If you grab everything, there’s no need to grind your way out.

But the thing is, animal drops are profitable items. Sell them to merchants for fast travel packs. But don’t forget: meat can substitute as health potions. This is extremely useful especially when you’re stuck in a dungeon trying to level up. Since you can’t go picking flowers, the meat has to substitute. However, you can check your inventory to open the crafting menu to turn harvests into health potions.
