How to Unlock Mountain Chocobo (Belle)
Progress through the game’s main story and unlock Chapter 4: Dawn of a New Era.
The Mountain Chocobos, sometimes referred to as Black Chocobos, inhabit the Junon Region, which can be unlocked in Chapter 4: Dawn of a New Era. Once you have reached Chapter 4, head to Gabe’s Ranch and accept the Odd Job: Stuck in a Rut.
Complete the Odd Job: Stuck in a Rut at Gabe’s Ranch.
During this side quest, you will be able to capture the Mountain Chocobo, Belle, and gain access to its abilities while exploring the Junon Region.

Head to Chocobo Intel’s location.
Completing the Odd Job: Stuck in a Rut will also unlock Chocobo Intel: Birds of the Mountain. These Chocobo Intel are part of the World Intel that players must clear or unlock in order to achieve 100% completion in the game.

How to Capture Mountain Chocobo (Belle)
Can be wrangled in a Hide and Seek mini game.
After accepting the Odd Job: Stuck in a Rut, head to the abandoned farm to the west of Gabe’s Ranch. Doing so will start the Hide and Seek mini game, where you can wrangle and catch the Black Chocobo.
Use the trains as cover.
During the mini-game, you will see switches and levers that make the small trains move. These trains will serve as your cover to avoid getting detected by the yellow Chocobos nearby. Remember to stay behind cover and move along the trains to remain undetected until you reach the Black Chocobo.
Press the second switch and get the stones.
Once you have reached the second switch, activate it and pick up the stones along the way. These stones can be used to distract the Chocobos, and they can also be used to turn on switches.
Throw a stone at the third switch to activate the train.
This is where the stones come into play. Throw a stone at the third switch to activate the next train. By doing this, you will be able to turn on the switch without the yellow Chocobo near the switch noticing. After that, simply move along with the train and proceed to the next switch.
Throw a stone at the last switch.
After reaching another train, look for the switch behind the train. Once you have located it, use the stone to activate it, just like you did previously. Hide behind the train once again and follow it while remaining undetected by the Chocobos nearby.
Sneak behind the Black Chocobo and press the Triangle button to catch it.
Follow the route of the last train until you can get behind the Black Chocobo. Then, slowly approach it until the Δ button appears on your screen. Press the Δ button to wrangle and mount the Black Chocobo. Doing so will complete the mini-game and unlock the Black Chocobo.

Mountain Chocobo Abilities
Climbs areas that are unreachable by foot.
Mountain Chocobo can climb slopes and cliffs using their large and sharp talons. The arrows pointing upward indicate that it can be climbed by Mountain Chocbos. Therefore, if you see one of these special markings, use a Mountain Chocobo to find out what’s up ahead.
