The default party during the fight against Materia Guardian cannot be changed, though the battle is easy enough for both characters to win with minimal effort. Just follow the tutorial on the basic combat mechanics and abilities available to you during the fight to defeat Materia Guardian.

You can only customize Cloud’s materia loadout for this fight as those equipped on Sephiroth cannot be changed. Have Cloud use Fire materia linked with Level Boost materia to be able to use Fira which Materia Guardian is weak to. Then, feel free to have Cloud equip Healing for Cure (though he will not need to heal so much during the fight).
How to Beat Materia Guardian (Boss Strategy)
Use Sephiroth to quickly build up the boss’ stagger gauge.
Sephiroth stats and arsenal of moves and spells essentially allow him to clear this fight by himself. Just build up ATB using normal attacks and follow-up moves from Aura Charge before unloading on the boss with abilities like Zanshin and Hell’s Gate.
Do not forget to press △ after performing Zanshin or Hell’s Gate to execute additional follow-up moves like Zanshin Rising and Infernal Gate to stack even more damage.
Attack the boss with fire magic.
Materia Guardian is weak to fire so using fire spells will allow you to render it into the pressured state fast.
Aim for its legs when it grabs Cloud.
When the boss binds Cloud with one of its hind legs, switch targets and aim for the one that is holding Cloud to free him. You can simply cast Fire on to break Cloud loose.
Hit one of its legs when it climbs to the ceiling.
Materia Guardian will cling to the ceiling during the second phase of the fight. To force it to crash into the ground, use Fire on one of its legs. After the boss plummets to the ground, it will be open to follow-up attacks for a brief period.
Use Dualblade Dance during the third phase.
When the boss starts to gather Mako energy during the third phase of the fight, use Dualblade Dance (Synergy Ability) to knock it down. It will be in a defenseless state again afterwards so unload on it before it can recover.
Use Limit Breaks.
To close out the fight, have Cloud and Sephiroth use their Limit Breaks. Be sure to follow-up Sephiroth’s Octaslash with Octaslash Prime by pressing the △ button. Doing so will cause Sephiroth to end his attack with a powerful finisher that deals additional damage to the boss (usually enough to end the fight).
