Side Quest Walkthrough – In Her Mother’s Footsteps [Horizon Zero Dawn]

The page contains the second Side Quest In Her Mother’s Footsteps which follows the journey of Aloy as she encounters an injured man who requests for assistance in searching for his missing daughter who tried to collect a cherished heirloom from a dangerous machine.

Side Quest Walkthrough – In Her Mother’s Footsteps

Objective #1 Find Arana

Note the destination marker and attempt to follow the path, however if desired there are some items hidden in the grass patches if you inspect them such as Ridge Wood, Shock Wax Root and Fire Kiln Root. Cross the river by going through the broken tree stumps that have assembled in a single file line.

Kill the Watchers

Once you have crossed the river, stay low to conceal yourself from patrolling Watchers, then aggro them one by one to whittle them down conveniently. A good tactic is to execute Silent Strikes or hitting their eye to deal more heavy damage. Loot the machines remains for some parts.

Talk to Arana

Once you have taken them out, approach the little girl by the tall tree and a cutscene will play.

Follow Arana’s Tracks

Loot the remains of the Watchers for some resources, then perform a Focus to scan the surroundings, this changes the color of the Tracks being searched to a purple color.

Follow the Scrapper’s Tracks

Stay close to Arana’s footprints to find a clue on where they lead, though note that Aloy has already formulated an idea of what it is. Again execute the Focus to search for it, it should end at the edge of the river but going to the other side, the marks should reappear. This path should lead you to the Southern Embrace entrance, where there’s a campfire to save at.

Recover Arana’s Spear

Stay low as you continue to follow the trail, note that there is a Scrapper on a ledge. Tuck yourself into the grass patches to get to a safe spot, then bait it so that it separates from the group. Should you prefer to do it the hard way, you can simply get it to go back to the pack and face all of them in a huge wave of machines, do note that you might need a bit more ammunition to handle the horde.

Perform the Silent Strike to the lone Scrapper, it should take it out with a single blow. If it does eliminate the machine, examine the destroyed remains to obtain Arana’s mother’s Spear. Go back to where Thok was idling and he will reward you with a permanent Spear Upgrade.
