Best Backgrounds to Choose for Starfield

Choose the background which has the traits you like.

Your character’s initial set of skills in Starfield are based on your chosen background. Because of this, just choose the background that best suits how you want to roleplay in the game.

If you cannot decide what background you want for your character, just pick one based on the starting skills you want. Note that starting skills are not exclusive to any background so regardless of what you choose, you can get all of the skills if you have enough skill points.

Best Background for Gunfights

Soldier
  • Fitness – You have 10% more oxygen available.
  • Ballistics – Ballistic weapons do 10% more damage.
  • Boost Pack Training – You can now utilize boost packs.
Combat Medic
  • Pistol Certification – Pistols do 10% more damage.
  • Medicine – Med Packs, Trauma Packs, and Emergency Kits restore 10% additional Health 10% faster.
  • Wellness – Increase your maximum health by 10%.

Choosing the Soldier or Combat Medic backgrounds grants you increased gun damage.

The Soldier’s Fitness and Boost Training Pack skills allow them better mobility. The Combat Medic, meanwhile, benefits from the Medicine and Wellness abilities which give them an edge in terms of survivability.

Best Backgrounds for Stealth

Background Starting Skills
Ronin
  • Dueling – Melee weapons do 25% more damage. Take 10% less damage while wielding a melee weapon.
  • Stealth – Adds a Stealth Meter. You are 25% more difficult to detect when sneaking. Suppressed weapons do an additional 5% sneak attack Damage.
  • Scavenging – There’s a chance you’ll find extra credits when searching containers.

The Ronin background’s Duel skill is among the best skills for fighting enemies with melee weapons. Stealth, meanwhile, is the background’s signature ability and is essential for any sneak build that focuses on taking down foes using close-range armaments like knives.

Best Backgrounds for Ship Dogfighting

Bounty Hunter
  • Piloting – You can now utilize ship thrusters.
  • Targeting Control Systems – Unlocks ships targeting functionality.
  • Boost Pack Training – You can now utilize boost packs.
Long Hauler
  • Weight Lifting – Increase total carrying capacity by 10 kilograms.
  • Piloting – You can now utilize ship thrusters.
  • Ballistic Weapon Systems – Ballistic ship weapons have 10% increased damage and cost 20% less to use in Targeting Mode.

The Piloting skill of Bounty Hunters and Long Haulers is essential for better mobility during ship dogfights so any of these backgrounds are ideal if you want to specialize in space combat.

Bounty Hunters also have the Targeting Control Systems skill which is useful for destroying specific parts of an enemy’s ship such as the foe’s shields, weapon systems, and engines.

Long Haulers, meanwhile, enjoy increased carrying load thanks to the versatile Weight Lifting skill, allowing you to collect and hoard more items while exploring in the game.
