Best Skills to Get for Starfield

Versatile Skills

The skills listed below are among the most useful ones to get in Starfield regardless of playstyle. Having good mobility, in particular, is extremely advantageous in battle so make sure to get the Boost Pack Training skill as much as possible.

Fitness

Upgrading your Fitness skill allows you to sprint for a longer period which is extremely useful while exploring or during battle.

Fitness (Novice) 1 – You have 10% more oxygen available. Use up all available Oxygen 20 times.
2 – You have 20% more oxygen available. Use up all available Oxygen 50 times.
3 – Use up all available Oxygen 100 times. You have 30% more oxygen available.
4 – Sprinting and power attacks now use significantly less oxygen.

Weight Lifting

You can simply have companions carry items you pick up so you avoid getting encumbered too fast, though it is better to be able to stock up on as many loot as you can yourself. This saves you the hard decision of having to discard unwanted gear you find that you can sell off at shops.

Weight Lifting (Novice) 1 – Increase total carrying capacity by 10 kilograms. Sprint for 1000 meters while at 75% or more of your maximum load capacity.
2 – Increase total carrying capacity by 25 kilograms. Sprint for 2500 meters while at 75% or more of your maximum load capacity.
3 – Increase total carrying capacity by 50 kilograms. Sprint for 5000 meters while at 75% or more of your maximum load capacity.
4 – Increase total carrying capacity by 100 kilograms. Gain 50% resistance to stagger.

Commerce

You will spend a good portion of the game selling off stuff you get from quests or from exploring that you do not really need. Because of this, it is essential that you are able to offload them at shops for much higher than their regular going price by unlocking and upgrading this skill.

Commerce (Novice) 1 – Buy for 5% less and sell for 10% more. Buy or sell 25 unique items.
2 – Buy or sell 75 unique items. Buy for 10% less and sell for 15% more.
3 – Buy or sell 150 unique items. Buy for 15% less and sell for 20% more.
4 – Buy for 20% less and sell for 25% more.

Surveying

You start out with only being able to 10 scan from a distance of up to 10 meters which is extremely short. Be sure to upgrade this skill to make scanning easier as you discover more subjects to log using the hand scanner.

Surveying (Novice) 1 – Adds an optional zoom to the hand scanner, and scan distance is increased to 20 meters. Use the hand scanner to scan 10 unique resources, flora, or fauna.
2 – Adds another level of zoom to the hand scanner, and scan distance is increased to 30 meters. Use the hand scanner to scan 25 unique resources, flora, or fauna.
3 – Adds another level of zoom to the hand scanner, and scan distance is increased to 40 meters. Use the hand scanner to scan 50 unique resources, flora, or fauna.
4 – Adds another level of zoom to the hand scanner, and scan distance is increased to 50 meters.

Boost Pack Training

In addition to improving your mobility in battle, this skill lets you get to hard-to-reach areas while exploring. Be sure to get this skill to at least Rank 2 as boost pack fuel runs out quite quickly on just Rank 1.

Boost Pack Training (Novice) 1 – You can now utilize boost packs. Boost jump 10 times while in combat.
2 – Using a boost pack expends less fuel. Boost jump 25 times while in combat.
3 – Boost pack fuel regenerates more quickly. Boost jump 50 times while in combat.
4 – Doubles previous bonuses.

Security

Many rare items, including Legendary gear, can be found in chests with Advanced, Expert, and Master difficulty locks. You may miss out some powerful equipment if you ignore ranking up Security so be sure to upgrade it while going through the main quests or side quests.

Security (Novice) 1 – You can attempt to hack Advanced locks, and 2 auto attempts can be banked. Pick 5 locks.
2 – You can attempt to hack Expert locks, and 3 auto attempts can be banked. Rings now turn blue when the pick can be slotted. Pick 15 locks.
3 – You can attempt to hack Master-level locks, and 4 auto attempts can be banked. Pick 25 locks.
4 – Expend a digipick to eliminate keys that aren’t required to solve the puzzle. 5 auto attempts can be banked.

Targeting Control Systems

While this skill is essential for any dogfight-focused build, it is still among the most useful skills to get for simply going around the game’s main quest or side quests.

Once you unlock the targeting function, you will be able to fire at specific parts of the enemy’s ship (such as their engines or weapons) in slow motion. This makes it easier to shut down your foe’s movement or offense during dogfights.
