Pickpocketing Tips for Starfield
- Equip armor with “Chameleon” on it.
- Raise Theft level to 3 or higher.
- Do a quick save before trying to steal an item that has a low success rate.
- Target NPCs that are not moving.
- You can pickpocket even in crowded areas.
- If you fail and are chased by security, you can try leaving the area or avoiding detection for 24. Doing either will lift the security alert.
Unlock the Theft Skill.
You can only start pickpocketing NPCs in Starfield after you have unlocked the Theft skill. Note that Theft is among the initial skills of available to the Cyber Runner and Gangster backgrounds. Choose these if you want to roleplay a character that frequently pickpockets people in the game.
Starfield Best Backgrounds to Choose
Approach NPCs while in stealth mode.
Go into stealth mode by pressing B/Ctrl and approach your target. Then, press A/E to pickpocket them.
You will know that you are sneaking when the Talk option changes to Pickpocket.
Pickpocket success chance goes down when you are detected.
The success rate of the item you want to pickpocket from an NPC is displayed next to the item name. The higher the number, the more likely you are to get the item.
When an NPC is moving or looking at you, a “Detected” prompt will appear. This means that the chance of pickpocketing the NPC has been reduced to 20%.
Aim for NPCs that are not moving or are not looking at you.
Bear in mind that the success rate of pickpocketing after you have been detected does not change even in with the Chameleon armor effect which allows you to blend in the environment.
What happens if you fail?
If you fail to pickpocket an NPC, a nearby security guard will come after you.
After you are caught you will be taken to the police station and lose all of your other stolen goods. You will also be fined for 500 credits in addition to getting time penalties. There is also an option to pay the large fine so you that security does not confiscate any of your stolen items.
Your relationship with companions, however, does not decrease if you are caught pickpocketing.
When security has been alerted to your crime, you cannot use fast travel. You can try avoiding the guards and get out of the city.
