Warner Brothers and Monolith Productions are teaming up again for the sequel to the critically-acclaimed 2014 open-world adventure title Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. The upcoming Middle-earth: Shadow of War is confirmed for release on August 22 in North America, and August 25 for Europe. Supported platforms for the game are the PS4/PS4 Pro, Xbox One (Including Project Scorpio), Steam and Windows 10.
Shadow of War picks up some time after the events of the previous game, in the period between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The franchise’s main characters Talion (a Gondor ranger) and Celebrimbor (an Elf Lord) have forged a new Ring of Power to use against the Dark Lord Sauron.
As with Shadow of Mordor, Shadow of War uses the much-praised Nemesis System as its gameplay engine. This time, however, WB and Monolith have expanded the Nemesis System with “Nemesis Fortresses” and “Followers”.
Extensive DLC and preorder options are likewise already in the pipeline for Shadow of War, despite the actual release date being several months away. WB said that four different versions of the game will be available:
- Standard (the base game)
- Silver (Adds two Orc Tribes to the Nemesis system)
- Gold (two Orc Tribes plus a season pass for upcoming story expansions)
- Mithril(All additions plus collectible items)
A gameplay trailer for Middle-earth: Shadow of War is expected by March 8. In the meantime, watch the official announcement trailer here.
