The sequel to the critically-acclaimed video game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now in development according to the teaser shown during the Nintendo Direct stream on June 11, 2019.

Zelda, now sporting shorter hair, is accompanied by Link as she traverses a cave which houses a sealed creature. The creature emanates Malice similar to Calamity Ganon. The trailer suggests that they are exploring the depths of Hyrule to destroy the source of the Great Calamities that have plagued their land for thousands of years.

The creepy music, the dark environment, and the horrifying red-haired creature shown at the end of the trailer suggest that the sequel could have dark elements like in Majora’s Mask.

Who is the Red-Haired Creature?

There are already multiple theories circulating about the identity of the scary creature with red glowing eyes.

Some are saying that this creature is Ganondorf, a long-time villain in the series. His helpless body is held by a glowing hand that may belong to a Twili, a race introduced in Twilight Princess.

The green light emanating from the glowing hand also bears resemblance to the markings found in Midna’s body and clothing, a Twili and an important character in Twilight Princess. If there is a connection between Twilight Princess and this game, this could be both the second chapter of Breath of the Wild and also the continuation of the Twili race’s story.

Aside from the familiar red hair, the glowing piece on its forehead also implies that this is the Ganondorf of Twilight Princess and Ocarina of Time. The symbol found in its earring also looks like the symbol for the Gerudo, Ganondorf’s race.

The trailer did not give a release date for the sequel. Nintendo must be letting the Zelda team take their time to develop the game and turn it into another masterpiece. For now, Zelda fans will enjoy theorizing and speculating what the next chapter of Breath of the Wild is about.
