ZL+A

Perfect Guard or parry can be done by pressing [A] in time with the enemy’s attack while holding up a shield with [ZL].

If your timing is off, you will fail the action and become defenseless so be careful.

Cannot Perfect Guard unless you equip a shield.

Perfect Guard cannot be used without a shield equipped.

If you are using with a two-handed weapon such as a greatsword, spear, or bow, you will only be able to Perfect Guard while  your armament is sheathed.

Perfect Guard Tips and Tricks

Learn enemy attacks.

The most important thing in timing a Perfect Guard is to learn the enemy’s attack motion.

Perfect Guard is a test of timing. If you do not know when the enemy will attack, you will not be able to time the parry well.

When learning Perfect Guard at the start, it is recommended to focus on learning to time wide enemy attacks that are easy to time.

Keep your shield ready.

When aiming for Perfect Guards, hold up your shield in advance and wait for the enemy to attack .

If you hold up your shield, you only have to press [A] in time with the enemy’s attack, making it easier to Perfect Guard.

Having a shield up will simply result in a normal guard if your timing is delayed which will still help by reducing the damage you take.

Beam attacks can be timed by their sound.

The beam that machines shoot is very fast and is extremely difficult to Perfect Guard by just seeing it.

After the beam is locked on to you, the sound of the attack gets higher and higher. The beam is finally fired after sounding you hear the “beep.”

It is easier to succeed in Perfect Guarding beam attacks if you delay the sound by one tempo after the “beep” sound.

Continuous Perfect Guard by switching shields.

If you switch shields after a successful Perfect Guard, you can perform consecutive Perfect Guards.

This is a technique that can be used when beam attacks are shot by multiple machine enemies.

You can attack immediately by crouching after a successful Perfect Guard.

If you successfully perform a Perfect Guard, the animation will go into slow motion.

If you crouch during this time, the animation will be cut so you will be able to counterattack faster.

Try to use this technique after you have mastered Perfect Guard.

Advantages of Perfect Guard

Take no damage.

Performing a successful Perfect Guard will prevent you from taking any damage.

You can Perfect Guard most enemy attacks such as large swinging attacks, flame bullets, blasts, and energy beams, so try it as often as possible.

Shield durability does not decrease.

Pulling off Perfect Guards does not reduce shield durability.

If you master Perfect Guard, you can even defeat Lynel even with just a wooden shield.

Can leave enemies defenseless.

If a Perfect Guard succeeds, the enemy will be defenseless after the slow motion effect.

During this time, you have a chance to attack so be sure to strike hard and stack up damage.

Can bounce back beam attacks.

The beam emitted by machines can be bounced back with Just Guard.

It is recommended to use Perfect Guard because it lets you destroy machines easily.
