Because Alola is a place with various terrains, you’re going to need some help. Introducing the new Ride Gear feature – a new feature from Pokémon Sun and Moon. Since there are some items you want on unreachable places, you’re going to need your Pokémon to get it for you. In the course of the storyline, you’ll be able to get several Ride Gears that will allow you to ride your Pokémon and get the item.
So, what is Ride Gear?
Notice that the bicycle and the HMs don’t exist there anymore? That’s because the Ride Gear is a combination of both. The bicycle increases speed in getting around on land and the HM allows you to destroy certain objects and get through areas such as the ocean.. In the old games, people relied on Surf (HM03) and Fly (HM02) to get around. Now, you can ride your Pokémon any time and anywhere. When you obtain a specific Pokémon, they will already have the special technique on hand.
How to use Poké Ride
To ride the Pokémon, press Y to open the menu and look for the Pokémon you want to ride. Once you ride a Pokemon, press B to perform a special action. Each Pokemon you can ride has a different action.
Example how to use:
Stoutland
For Stoutland, he has a special ability known as Search. To call Stoutland, use the Ride Pager you obtained prior. While riding on Stoutland, hold the B button and begin looking around. As it searches, the floor will be marked with a blue or red mark. If the mark is red, that means there’s an item nearby. When you hear a ping, that means you’re near the item and you can now dig it out.
How to assign a Pokémon for your Poké Ride hotkey
Open the Poké Ride menu using Y. When you open up the menu, there should be a list of Pokémon that you can use to ride. Using the up, down, right, left buttons, you can use these as your hotkeys to easily ride around.
Name | Move | Location |
---|---|---|
Taurous | Ride | After defeating Hala in the Melemele Island Grand Trial |
Stoutland | Search | Speak to Mallow in Paniola Ranch |
Lapras | Paddle | Speak to Lana in Brooklet Hill |
Charizard | Ride | Complete Kiawe’s trial in Wela Volcano Park |
Mudsdale | Gallop | Speak to Hapu in Route 11 |
Sharpedo | Jet | Speak to Grimsley in Route 15 |
Machamp | Shove | Speak to Hapu’s grandmother in Ancient Poni Path |
While these Pokémon are to help you get around, there’s no need to lug around an HM slave anymore. The Poké Ride feature was meant to eliminate the use of HMs and the need to bring an HM slave around.
