What are Coins?
Coins are a staple in the Super Mario franchise. In the earlier Mario games, collecting coins was a measurement for high scores. In multiplayer games, if you managed to get more coins in the game than other players, you would have the highest score. Collecting 100 coins in a single-player game netted you an extra life or 1-UP.
As for Super Mario Odyssey, coins are used for their more typical purpose: buying items in a store. This store is the Crazy Cap shop, where you can buy various items such as Life-Up Hearts, outfits, and Power Moons. Collecting coins is crucial in order to progress forward in the game.

However, there are also different kinds of coins in the game called Regional Coins or Local Coins. These coins are often themed after the kingdom where they belong. For example, the Seaside Kingdom has coins which look like seashells, and the Sand Kingdom has ones that look like inverted pyramids. These Local Coins are used to buy kingdom-exclusive items.
Collecting Coins
As mentioned before, the coins that you collect in your adventure can be used to buy items in Crazy Cap. In Odyssey, collecting coins has now become an integral part of the game as they are needed to purchase Power Moons – important items in Odyssey – and outfits, which are essential in areas where you need a specific costume to progress.
Crazy Cap is a store scattered around different kingdoms offering several items that help Mario in his adventure. A Crazy Cap store in one kingdom may sell different items than the stores in another kingdom. So it is important for you to visit all the Crazy Cap stores in Odyssey while collecting coins. You can find Super Mario Odyssey coins scattered around different areas of each kingdom. They are often obtained near pathways, by defeating enemies, or by unlocking boxes or cages.
