Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is the first major paid content update to the critically-acclaimed action role-playing game. It is the largest expansion ever released by developer FromSoftware, renowned for the Soulsborne series which has achieved worldwide praise from players and game journalists alike.

New Features in Shadow of the Erdtree

New Story

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree adds a new story scenario that focuses on the Empyrean Miquella, the enigmatic figure frequently mentioned throughout the base game but was never seen. Miquella is implied by various characters in the Lands Between as having played a key role in major events, specifically in the creation of the Haligtree.

In Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Miquella guides the Tarnished (player) to a mysterious new location known as the Land of Shadow where the goddess Marika before them first set foot.

Mesmer the Impaler

Central to the DLC is the character Mesmer the Impaler shown on expansion’s banner and various promotional material. As tradition in most Soulsborne games, Mesmer is presented as the major antagonist players will need to battle towards the end of their journey in the Land of Shadow.

New Explorable World

The Land of Shadow, said to be located beyond the Lands Between, consists of vast new explorable areas. A host of hostile and friendly characters also await players on their journey to uncover the secrets behind Miquella’s actions that shape the world of Elden Ring.

Along the way, the Tarnished must battle formidable new enemies and bosses who roam the open landscapes of the Land of Shadow or inhabit its many dungeons and ruins exclusive to the DLC.

New Equipment and Skills

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree also introduces several new weapons, armor sets, talismans, and other items that players can obtain on their journey through the Land of Shadow. In particular, new categories of armaments and spells are added to the game via the DLC, affording the Tarnished even more strategic options, synergies, and depth in combat.

Elden Ring Game Overview

Elden Ring is an action role-playing game by FromSoftware known for the critically-acclaimed Souls series, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

A collaborative project between Souls series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki and A Song of Fire and Ice author George R.R. Martin, Elden Ring is set on the fictional realm Lands Between. The shattering of the eponymous Elden Ring and the scattering of its shards known as the Great Runes ushers in the rule of Queen Marika the Eternal’s demigod offspring.

The game’s protagonist, a hero simply known as the Tarnished, sets forth to recover the lost shards of the Elden Ring from the possession of the demigods of the Lands Between and become the Elden Lord told in legend.

As with most FromSoftware games, Elden Ring features punishing difficulty, providing players with a level of challenge characteristic of the franchise. The Tarnished must explore the massive world of the Lands Between while meeting a cast of mysterious characters on their journey.

Challenging boss battles, a feature that the Souls games are known for, are present in Elden Ring. Players are encouraged to observe each boss’ attacks and behavior carefully to defeat them. The freedom that players are given to adopt different playstyles based on how they choose to customize their character will also affect their overall experience against various bosses in the game.

Among the most notable additions to Elden Ring that were not present in previous Souls games is mounted combat. Throughout their adventure, the Tarnished can summon a horse to traverse the expanse of the Lands Between or use their steed to gain better mobility in battle.

For the first time throughout FromSoftware’s acclaimed action RPG titles, Elden Ring will let players explore an open world that boasts a scale never seen before in the Dark Souls games. An entire map filled with caves, ruins, towers, and other dangerous locations can be raided to find treasure as well as challenging enemies lurking in each corner.
